Canon unveils new lens to expand creative possibilities

[output_post_excerpt]

Canon has launched the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, a new addition to its RF mount lens lineup for the EOS R mirrorless camera system. This innovative lens offers exciting new creative possibilities, with its constant f/2.8 aperture and a versatile zoom range designed for both hobbyists and content creators. Canon describes this as the first non-professional-grade lens of its kind, making it accessible to a wider range of users.

“We are excited to introduce the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM, a portable lens equipped with a popular focal range and highly desired fixed aperture of f/2.8. It is our belief that the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM will be warmly welcomed by all photographers and content creators in bringing their imagination to life,” said David Yeo, Senior Marketing Manager of Consumer Business, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore.

Versatility for all users

The RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is designed to be a versatile and user-friendly lens for various shooting conditions. With its bright constant f/2.8 aperture, photographers can capture high-quality images even in low-light environments. This wide aperture also allows users to create striking bokeh effects, making it ideal for both wide-angle shots and close-up portraits. At 28mm, photographers can capture expansive urban landscapes, while the 70mm range is perfect for close-up beauty shots.

For those using Canon’s APS-C cameras, the lens adapts into an effective full-frame equivalent zoom range of 44.8mm to 112mm, making it a solid choice for everyday photography, from portraits to product shots.

Advanced image stabilisation

One of the standout features of the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is its Optical Image Stabiliser, which provides added stability when shooting handheld. Even when using slower shutter speeds, the lens helps achieve sharp images, offering up to 5.5 stops of image stabilisation on cameras without In-Body Image Stabilisation (In-Body IS), such as the EOS R8. For those with cameras like the EOS R6 Mark II, the stabilisation improves further to 7.5 stops.

For video enthusiasts, the lens supports Movie Digital IS, allowing smooth, steady video footage even without a tripod or gimbal. This feature ensures that the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM can handle both still photography and video recording with ease, adding to its overall versatility.

Portable design without compromise

Though high-quality lenses with constant f/2.8 apertures are often associated with professional-grade equipment, the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM breaks the mould. With a compact length of just 9.22cm when retracted and a lightweight body of approximately 495g, it is 45% lighter than Canon’s professional-grade RF24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. This makes it an excellent choice for photographers on the go, as it is both portable and travel-friendly.

Despite not being part of Canon’s premium L-series, the RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM boasts impressive durability. It comes equipped with weather sealing and shock resistance, similar to higher-end models, ensuring it can handle various shooting conditions. Moreover, the advanced optical design promises image quality that far surpasses standard kit lenses, making it a significant upgrade for users looking to step up their photography game. The RF28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM is set to hit the market in late September 2024.
