Fujifilm has launched the instax SQUARE 2, an entry-level analogue instant camera that incorporates a dedicated landscape shooting mode alongside two physical colour filters. Succeeding the instax SQUARE SQ1 introduced in 2020, the camera carries forward established features from its predecessor, retaining automatic exposure as well as a mirror for composing selfies.
Designed for instax SQUARE film, the new model produces instant photographs with a 1:1 aspect ratio. Across Fujifilm’s broader instax lineup, which also features the card-sized mini format and the larger WIDE format at twice the size of mini film, the square format allows photographers to include both subjects and their surroundings within the frame, making it suitable for portraits, group photographs and landscapes.
Three shooting modes for different subject distances
Rotating the lens barrel switches on the instax SQUARE 2 and allows users to select among three shooting modes. Standard Mode is intended for everyday photography, while Close-up Mode accommodates nearby subjects and selfies. The newly introduced Landscape Mode is designed for more distant subjects, including landscapes and group photographs, with Fujifilm noting that the setting helps users capture clearer photographs of distant subjects. After selecting a mode, users can frame their subject and press the shutter button to take a photograph.
Alongside the new shooting mode, the camera retains two functions introduced with the SQ1. Automatic Exposure adjusts the shutter speed and flash output according to the scene, helping maintain suitable brightness across different shooting conditions. In addition, a Selfie Mirror positioned beside the lens allows users to check their framing when taking self-portraits.
Mood Filter offers warm and cool tones
A new Mood Filter function lets users change the appearance of their photographs using a switch beside the lens. By placing a physical filter in front of the lens, the mechanism alters the light passing through it when a photograph is taken. Two options are available: Warm produces softer, warmer tones, while Cool is intended to create clearer, crisper tones. According to Fujifilm, the filters use the existing light and colours of the scene to change the resulting image while retaining the grain and photographic characteristics associated with analogue photography.
The selected treatment becomes part of the captured photograph, with the resulting effect appearing as the instant print develops. Fujifilm describes the feature as a way to give familiar subjects and everyday scenes different visual characteristics without changing the basic shooting process.
New SOFT HAZE film and release details
Fujifilm has also detailed SOFT HAZE, a new instax SQUARE film that uses a newly developed photographic emulsion to produce soft light effects and warm colour tones. The company describes the film as offering a photographic appearance distinct from conventional instax film. Intended for various subjects, including portraits, skin tones, sunlit interiors and travel landscapes, the film derives its tonal characteristics from the composition of the photosensitive emulsion, which Fujifilm says produces a distinctive analogue appearance that cannot be fully replicated using digital effects.
The SQUARE 2 features an exterior combining straight lines with large curved surfaces, with striped detailing on the grip and lens intended to improve handling while contributing to the camera’s appearance. Three colour options will be offered: Misty White, Slate Blue and Brick Red. Fujifilm has scheduled the instax SQUARE 2’s launch for 28 October 2026, with the product release set for 11 November 2026. The camera will be priced at S$169.
