Insta360 launches Luna Ultra gimbal camera with Leica optics and detachable display
Insta360’s Luna Ultra combines Leica optics, 8K video, dual cameras and a detachable OLED screen in a compact gimbal camera.
Insta360 has launched the Luna Ultra, a compact gimbal camera developed with Leica for mobile filmmakers and content creators. The camera combines a dual-lens system, 8K video recording, mechanical stabilisation and automated subject tracking in a device weighing slightly more than 200g.
Table Of Content
Its main camera uses a 1-inch sensor and a Leica Summicron lens, while a second telephoto camera provides additional focal lengths and closer framing. A detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen allows users to monitor and control the camera remotely, making it easier to record from unusual angles or work without a separate camera operator.
Dual cameras cover wide and telephoto shooting
The Luna Ultra records video at up to 8K at 30 frames per second with Dolby Vision. It also supports 10-bit I-Log recording, which retains more colour information for adjustments during editing, and offers up to 14 stops of dynamic range to preserve detail in bright and dark areas.
Its secondary telephoto camera uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor and an F2.0 aperture. Together, the two cameras cover five focal lengths and provide up to 12× zoom. Insta360 says this includes 6× lossless zoom and allows the camera to produce natural background blur.
For photography, the Luna Ultra captures 37MP UltraPhotos and 200MP Scenic Panorama images. PureVideo Mode is designed to improve low-light footage by reducing noise and increasing brightness and detail at resolutions of up to 4K at 60 frames per second.
Three AI chips handle image processing and the camera’s automated functions. Users can also select Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome colour profiles, alongside a range of cinematic filters. The camera supports the Academy Color Encoding System, commonly known as ACES, for users working with professional colour-managed editing processes.
Detachable screen supports remote filming
The 2-inch OLED touchscreen can be removed from the camera and used for remote monitoring and control. It receives an HD video feed from up to 20 metres away, which could help with solo filming, fixed camera positions and shots where the user cannot stand directly behind the camera.
Insta360 describes the detachable screen as an industry first for a gimbal camera. For moving shots, the Luna Ultra combines 3-axis mechanical stabilisation with electronic image stabilisation. Its Deep Track 5.0 system can follow individual subjects, adjust the zoom while tracking movement, keep groups in the frame and automatically recompose shots.
The camera has a 1,550mAh battery that provides up to four hours of use, according to Insta360. Fast charging restores the battery to 80% in approximately 23 minutes. It also includes 47GB of usable internal storage and supports microSD cards with capacities of up to 1TB.
Tools for multi-camera and mobile editing
Built-in timecode allows footage from several cameras to be synchronised during editing. Insta360 said the files can be used with applications including Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro. QR Color Share transfers colour settings between compatible devices, while the Insta360 app can identify selected moments in recorded footage and generate edited clips. The camera also includes a built-in wind guard and works directly with Insta360 Mic systems using one or two transmitters.
Optional accessories include a POV Head Tracker for hands-free recording, Black Mist filters, ND filters and a wide-angle lens that expands the field of view to 108°.
The Luna Ultra is available through the Insta360 Store, Shopee, Lazada and selected retailers, although some markets will receive it later. Pricing starts at S$969, with Cosmic Black and Stellar White colour options.
