STTGDC has secured a US$590 million green loan facility to finance the fit-out and subsequent operation of its two-building data centre campus in the Greater Tokyo area. Covering STTGDC TYO1 and STTGDC TYO2, the campus will provide a combined 70.8MW of IT capacity.
Located within Goodman Business Park in Inzai City, the campus is being developed to meet growing demand from hyperscalers, cloud service providers and enterprises for secure, scalable and energy-efficient digital infrastructure. Singapore-headquartered STTGDC said the financing would strengthen its ability to serve customers expanding their cloud, AI and other mission-critical digital workloads in Japan. While TYO1 is already operational, TYO2 remains under development.
Green loan ties financing to environmental targets
The loan facility is structured in accordance with the Green Loan Principles, with environmental eligibility criteria covering building certification and energy efficiency. These include the data centres attaining an agreed green building certification and achieving a design Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.3 or below. Standard Chartered acted as Lead Coordinator for the financing, alongside Mizuho Bank, OCBC, Société Générale and UOB, with Standard Chartered and Société Générale also serving as Green Loan Coordinators.
Nelson Lim, Group Chief Financial Officer at STTGDC, described the financing as reflecting the banking partners’ confidence in the Tokyo campus and outlined the role of the green-loan structure in the company’s investment decisions. “It provides the capital foundation to advance the campus while maintaining a disciplined approach to growth. Importantly, the green-loan structure aligns our financing strategy with the environmental performance of the assets we develop, reinforcing how sustainability is integrated into our capital allocation and investment decisions.”
TYO1 combines energy efficiency with operational certifications
As STTGDC’s first operational data centre in Japan, TYO1 has achieved LEED Gold certification and is designed to achieve an annualised PUE of less than 1.25, below the maximum design ratio specified in the green loan’s environmental criteria. The facility uses a closed-loop cooling system designed to minimise operational water use, with no ongoing water consumption during normal operations.
According to STTGDC, TYO1 has also maintained carbon-neutral operations for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions since commencing operations, with the company continuing to pursue renewable-energy procurement and improvements in energy efficiency. Alongside its environmental credentials, the facility has obtained ISO 22301, ISO 27001 and ISO/IEC 20000 certifications, and complies with Japan Data Centre Council guidelines.
TYO2 is being developed for AI and accelerated computing
The second building, STTGDC TYO2, is being developed to support high-density AI and accelerated-computing workloads. Its design includes provision for future liquid-cooling deployment, with the facility targeting TIA-942-C Design Certification and LEED Gold.
Kiyoshi Maeda, Chief Executive Officer – Japan at STTGDC, identified the Tokyo campus as central to the company’s long-term commitment to Japan. “Customers need infrastructure that can scale with their ambitions while delivering the resilience and efficiency required for mission-critical operations. Through STTGDC TYO1 and STTGDC TYO2, we are building that capacity in one of Japan’s established data centre markets and creating a strong platform for our continued growth in the country.”
