Vertiv adds 1.8MW PowerUPS 9000 for high-density AI data centres
Vertiv has introduced a 1.8MW PowerUPS 9000 unit to stabilise dynamic GPU load fluctuations and protect electrical infrastructure across Asian data centres.
Vertiv has expanded its PowerUPS 9000 uninterruptible power supply family with a new 1.8MW model engineered for large-scale data centres, high-density AI systems and other critical computing environments. Available across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, the release extends a platform previously offered in capacities ranging from 250kW to 1,250kW.
Vertiv developed this higher-capacity system to manage rapid changes in electricity demand typical of AI infrastructure. Modern workloads present unique operating challenges because large clusters of graphics processors frequently move between low and peak utilisation within milliseconds. Such immediate shifts require fast-acting power protection to maintain overall system integrity.
Managing rapid changes in power demand
Fast variations in computing load can disrupt batteries, electrical switching equipment, generators, transformers and the wider infrastructure supplying power to a data centre. These fluctuations are particularly critical in GPU clusters, where electricity requirements spike or drop almost instantaneously as utilisation shifts.
To mitigate these stresses, the PowerUPS 9000 1.8MW incorporates Battery Shield technology, which reduces unnecessary battery cycling during sudden surges in demand. The unit also includes Input Power Smoothing to make electricity drawn from upstream infrastructure considerably more predictable, while integrated state-of-charge management helps preserve battery capacity for emergency backup operations. Working together, these controls significantly limit the transmission of volatile computing swings to batteries and other supporting electrical components.
“Traditional UPS systems were not designed for the rapid and repetitive load transitions created by modern GPU environments,” said Arunangshu Chattopadhyay, director of AC power and power distribution at Vertiv Asia. “The latest expansion in the Vertiv PowerUPS 9000 family incorporates Vertiv’s advanced control, patented technologies that help stabilise power behaviour during extreme load fluctuations, while preserving battery health and reducing stress on upstream electrical infrastructure.”
Alongside its advanced electrical controls, the 1.8MW system adopts a high-power-density architecture that increases capacity within a compact footprint to address rising rack densities and limited floor space. Vertiv highlighted energy efficiency, serviceability and deployment flexibility as core design priorities, ensuring the unit integrates smoothly with its broader power and thermal infrastructure for high-density AI environments.
Testing controls against AI workload conditions
Vertiv validated the control technologies using its proprietary AI load simulator across various workload profiles, battery configurations, operating cycles and power fluctuation ranges. Test results confirmed that input current remained stable despite wide variations in output demand, demonstrating that the controls effectively protect batteries and upstream electrical infrastructure under simulated AI operating conditions.
The evaluation also drew on real-world collaboration with STT Singapore, focusing on scenarios that reflect live AI operating conditions such as rapid load changes and the coordination required between UPS units, energy storage systems and upstream power networks. Commenting on the market demand, Tony Gaunt, vice president for product management at Vertiv Asia, noted that expanding AI adoption is driving the need for higher-density power systems capable of responding swiftly to fluctuating loads. The 1.8MW addition provides operators running dense AI computing clusters with a higher-capacity option in the PowerUPS 9000 family.
