Amazon has unveiled the Echo Show 16, a large smart display that combines home management, entertainment, and artificial intelligence in a single device. Featuring a 16-inch screen, built-in Fire TV and the upgraded Alexa+ assistant, the device aims to offer more functionality than traditional smart displays.
The new model comes in two configurations: the standard version at US$499.99 and the anti-glare edition at US$569.99. Amazon is offering a US$100 discount on pre-orders, though the company has said deliveries will begin later in the year.
The Echo Show 16 builds on the company’s existing range of smart displays, which are commonly used for tasks such as setting timers, checking security cameras, and displaying household information. With a larger screen and added entertainment features, Amazon is positioning the latest model as a more versatile everyday device.
A larger screen with a slimmer design and reduced glare
One of the most significant changes to the Echo Show 16 is its redesigned display. The 16-inch screen is approximately 10 per cent larger than the one featured on the Echo Show 15, while the aluminium frame is nearly 40 per cent thinner. This combination gives the device a more streamlined appearance, with slimmer borders around the screen.
The larger display is intended to make information easier to view from a distance, particularly in shared spaces such as kitchens and living rooms. Its size also provides more room for entertainment, household schedules, photographs and smart home controls. By combining these functions in one place, Amazon hopes to make the display a more useful part of the connected home.
For users who struggle with reflections from windows or overhead lighting, Amazon is also introducing an optional Nanomatte finish. This version uses a finely textured glass surface designed to reduce glare by more than 90 per cent. The feature could be particularly useful in kitchens and other bright areas where reflections can make screens difficult to read.
The anti-glare option costs extra, raising the price from US$499.99 to US$569.99. However, the extra expense may appeal to households that intend to mount the display in a location exposed to direct sunlight or strong indoor lighting.
Amazon has also introduced night vision to the camera, marking a first for the Echo Show range. The addition could improve visibility when monitoring a room in low-light conditions, giving the device another role in home security.
However, the camera and microphone may raise privacy concerns for some households. Amazon included a physical switch that turns off both components, letting users turn them off when they aren’t needed. This provides a straightforward way to limit camera and microphone access without relying entirely on software settings.
Fire TV and Alexa+ expand entertainment and smart home features
The Echo Show 16 is designed to serve as more than a household information screen. With Fire TV built in, the device can also function as a compact television, giving users access to entertainment directly from the smart display. This could make it suitable for kitchens, bedrooms or other areas where installing a conventional television may be unnecessary.
Amazon is also introducing three new Screen Styles to change how the home screen presents information. These options let the display function as a smart home dashboard, a family organiser, or a digital photo frame. The different layouts let users adapt the device to their household needs instead of relying on a single default interface.
The box includes a remote control, making it easier to navigate entertainment content without repeatedly touching the screen. This addition supports the device’s role as a television alternative and gives users another way to interact with its features.
Artificial intelligence is another central part of Amazon’s plans for the Echo Show 16. The device supports Alexa+, the company’s upgraded AI assistant, which can generate interactive visual content rather than presenting every response as a block of text.
For example, when comparing products, Alexa+ can create a visual comparison chart to help users examine information more easily. Similar presentations could make complex responses more accessible, particularly when users need to review several options or organise information at a glance.
These capabilities could give the larger display a practical advantage over smart speakers and smaller screens. Instead of relying exclusively on spoken answers, users can interact with information visually while doing other household tasks.
However, access to these AI features comes with another consideration. Alexa+ is included with an Amazon Prime membership, while users without a qualifying membership may need to pay US$20 per month. This recurring expense could affect the device’s overall value for households that want to use its more advanced features.
Echo Show 16 pricing, accessories and availability
The Echo Show 16 starts at US$499.99 for the standard model, while the anti-glare version costs US$569.99. Amazon is offering a US$100 pre-order discount, bringing the prices down to US$399.99 and US$469.99 before any additional accessories or applicable charges.
The company also sells separate stands for users who prefer placing the display on furniture rather than mounting it on a wall. The standard Echo Show Stand costs US$69.99, while the swivel-and-tilt version costs US$124.99. The more adjustable option lets users adjust the screen’s position for different viewing angles.
The cost can increase considerably when you buy the device and accessories together. The anti-glare model paired with the swivel-and-tilt stand costs US$694.98 before discounts, taxes, or other applicable charges. Even with the US$100 pre-order reduction, the combined price would be US$594.98 before those additional costs.
The pricing puts the Echo Show 16 above many smaller smart displays, making it a more substantial investment for households seeking a connected home hub. Buyers will need to decide whether the larger screen, built-in Fire TV, improved glare reduction, and AI-powered features justify the added cost.
The device also has distinct core functions and capabilities that depend on a subscription. Users who mainly want to display family calendars, photos, and smart home controls may prioritise different things than those who want extensive access to Alexa+’s interactive AI features.
Amazon has indicated that the Echo Show 16 will ship later this year, though it did not specify an exact delivery date. The pre-order discount incentivises early buyers, but prospective customers may want to consider ongoing subscription costs and optional accessories before buying.
With its larger display, slimmer frame and expanded entertainment and AI capabilities, the Echo Show 16 represents Amazon’s effort to make smart displays more central to everyday home life. Whether it becomes a practical household hub or an expensive addition will depend on how frequently users take advantage of its features.
