Apple has confirmed that its upcoming Siri AI assistant will be available on older Apple TV 4K models via a software update, letting existing users access new features without buying the latest streaming device. The announcement offers a useful upgrade for owners of the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K, which were released in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The new Apple TV 4K, the device’s fourth generation, adds several improvements, including a faster processor, enhanced Siri capabilities, and support for a more advanced HomePod surround-sound setup. However, its US$299 starting price may discourage some users from upgrading. Bringing Siri AI to previous models gives customers another way to benefit from Apple’s latest software developments without paying for new hardware.
According to Apple’s release notes, the assistant will initially be available in beta on supported devices in selected markets. The update is expected to expand Siri’s capabilities on Apple TV, making it easier to discover entertainment, retrieve information, and receive recommendations based on personal context.
Siri AI expands its capabilities on older Apple TV devices
Apple’s announcement confirms that Siri AI will support Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later models. The company stated, “Siri AI is available as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later), and is available at launch in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK in English.”
The initial language and regional availability means eligible users in these markets can try the updated assistant in English. However, Apple has not provided a confirmed release date for the software update that will bring the feature to older devices.
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is scheduled to begin shipping on 13 November 2026 with Siri AI available from launch. This timing may indicate when the software update for existing devices could arrive, although Apple has not confirmed a specific date for the tvOS 27.2 rollout.
The second-generation Apple TV 4K arrived in 2021, followed by the third generation in 2022. By the time the new hardware launches, both models will be several years old, making software support particularly valuable for customers who want to extend the useful life of their streaming devices.
Although older models lack the processing power of the newest hardware, Apple has not announced any restrictions on the Siri AI features available to them. Performance could differ between generations, but the update is expected to introduce a more capable assistant without requiring users to replace their existing devices.
Personalised recommendations make Siri more useful
The updated Siri is designed to go beyond basic voice commands and offer more contextual answers. Instead of simply opening apps or searching for a specific title, the assistant can use broader knowledge and personal context to help users find information and entertainment more naturally.
For example, users may be able to locate an album that a friend recommended several weeks earlier, even if they cannot remember its name. They could also ask about a television series they watched with a family member and use the assistant to recall a specific episode.
These capabilities could make Apple TV more convenient for households that regularly use the device to watch films, television programmes and other content. Instead of manually browsing through menus or trying different search terms, viewers may be able to describe what they remember and receive more relevant results.
Siri AI is also expected to provide richer entertainment recommendations. Users who ask for suggestions may receive results that better reflect their interests or the context of their questions. This could reduce the time spent searching through streaming libraries, particularly when viewers know what kind of programme they want but cannot recall its title.
However, the precise capabilities available on older Apple TV models remain unconfirmed. Apple has not published a detailed comparison showing whether the second- and third-generation devices will offer the same response speed or every feature available on the latest hardware.
Even with those uncertainties, the software update represents a meaningful addition for existing owners. Improved voice search and more personalised recommendations could make an older Apple TV feel more capable, especially for users who want a better way to find content rather than a faster streaming box.
The update also demonstrates the importance of software support in extending the life of consumer electronics. Instead of reserving every new assistant feature for the latest model, Apple is bringing at least part of its updated experience to hardware that customers already own.
New Siri Remote offers another upgrade option
Alongside the software improvements, Apple has introduced an updated Siri Remote with additional features designed to make it easier to locate when misplaced. The remote includes a built-in speaker that can produce a sound to help users find it around the home.
It also supports Precision Finding on compatible iPhone models, providing more precise directions when the remote slips between sofa cushions or disappears elsewhere in a room. These additions address a familiar inconvenience for streaming device owners who frequently misplace their remotes.
Customers don’t need to buy the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K to use the updated remote. Apple has made the new accessory available for US$59, and it is compatible with previous-generation Apple TV devices. This gives existing owners another option for improving their setup without replacing the entire streaming box.
The remote’s upgraded tracking features may be particularly useful for households that share the device. Instead of searching manually, users can activate the locating features to help find the accessory. However, Precision Finding requires a compatible iPhone, so the experience will depend on the devices each customer has.
Together, the forthcoming Siri AI update and the updated remote offer two ways to improve an existing Apple TV setup. The software update will bring new assistant capabilities to supported second- and third-generation models at no additional hardware cost, while the remote offers optional convenience features for those willing to pay for an accessory.
Apple has not yet announced the exact release date for tvOS 27.2 or provided a complete breakdown of Siri AI availability across older models. For now, owners can expect support for eligible Apple TV 4K devices in the announced markets, with further details likely to clarify the rollout. The update could offer a practical reason to keep an existing device rather than spend US$299 on the newest model.
