Apple may drop physical SIM cards for iPhone 17 and introduce a redesigned case

Apple is set to launch the iPhone 17 on 9 September, with rumours of eSIM-only models and a redesigned clear case with MagSafe.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 on 9 September, with growing speculation that the company will fully embrace eSIM technology and reveal a refreshed phone case design. Leaks suggest that Apple’s latest flagship will follow its trend in the US market, where recent iPhones are already sold without physical SIM card slots, and extend the change to other regions, including Europe.

Apple expected to expand eSIM-only rollout

According to MacRumors, Apple has reportedly advised employees at Apple Authorised Resellers in the European Union to prepare for devices that no longer support traditional SIM cards. This aligns with earlier reports that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air model would be eSIM-only, with the change now likely to affect other models in the series.

eSIM technology allows users to activate mobile plans digitally, eliminating the need for physical cards. The move promises improved security and convenience, as switching between carriers and plans can be done more seamlessly. Apple’s shift comes shortly after Google announced that its new Pixel 10 series will be eSIM-only in the US, signalling a broader industry trend towards digital SIM adoption.

If confirmed, this will mark another major step in Apple’s strategy to simplify device design and eliminate physical ports and slots, a trend evident in its recent removal of headphone jacks and chargers from packaging.

Redesigned the clear case to debut alongside new iPhones

In addition to changes in connectivity, Apple is expected to launch a redesigned clear case for the iPhone 17 Pro with MagSafe. The case, similar to the one offered for the iPhone 16 Pro, will reportedly feature a new design that is less transparent. Leaked images shared by tipsters @MajinBuOfficial and @SonnyDickson reveal a solid panel covering most of the back, concealing MagSafe connectors while leaving only part of the phone exposed.

The new case design also appears to include a larger camera cut-out, consistent with leaked renders suggesting a redesign of the camera module. The Apple logo is positioned lower on the back, sitting centrally below the camera array.

Another notable change is that the case is expected to support a new Crossbody Strap accessory, allowing users to carry their phones with a magnetic lanyard. The accessory is anticipated to appeal to customers seeking hands-free carrying options for their devices.

Launch event set for 9 September

Apple is widely expected to officially announce the iPhone 17 series at its annual September event, scheduled for 9 September. The company typically reveals its flagship devices during this event, with pre-orders beginning shortly after. Alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple is also rumoured to unveil accessories, including the updated case and the Crossbody Strap.

While the full details remain unconfirmed, these leaks indicate that Apple is doubling down on its vision for a more streamlined and customisable smartphone ecosystem. In just over a week, consumers will find out whether the iPhone 17 will mark the end of the physical SIM card era for Apple’s devices.
