Audio-Technica has expanded its open-back headphone range with the ATH-AL5NC, a wireless model that combines the spacious sound of an open-back design with the convenience of Bluetooth connectivity. Priced at US$279, the headphones target listeners who want a more natural audio presentation and a lightweight, comfortable design without a cable.
The ATH-AL5NC follows Audio-Technica’s move to introduce open-back versions of some of its wired headphones. The new model takes the same general approach to wireless listening, though its open construction means it makes different compromises than conventional closed-back headphones. In particular, users can expect more sound to escape from the ear cups and less protection from surrounding noise.
The headphones use 53mm drivers and support high-resolution wireless audio up to 24-bit/96kHz with the LDAC codec. AAC and SBC are also supported, giving the ATH-AL5NC compatibility with a wide range of Bluetooth devices. LDAC is intended to appeal to listeners who want higher-quality wireless playback from compatible smartphones and other devices.
Wireless features focus on flexibility and long battery life
Audio-Technica has equipped the ATH-AL5NC with Bluetooth multipoint pairing, allowing the headphones to remain connected to two devices at the same time. This makes switching between activities more convenient, such as moving from music on a computer to calls on a smartphone.
Battery life is another major feature of the new model. Audio-Technica claims the headphones can provide up to 75 hours of continuous playback on a full charge. The fast-charging system can also deliver up to eight hours of additional listening after just 15 minutes of charging, reducing the need for lengthy charging sessions.
The ATH-AL5NC can be customised through Audio-Technica’s CONNECT app. The software provides access to features including sound presets, codec settings and equaliser adjustments. Users can also select different modes depending on how they intend to use the headphones, including settings designed for lower latency during gaming, noise reduction and reduced sound leakage.
These software features are particularly notable because the open-back construction limits what the headphones can achieve physically. Rather than providing the isolation normally associated with closed-back headphones, the ATH-AL5NC relies partly on software controls to adjust the listening experience for different situations.
Open-back design prioritises comfort and natural sound
The defining feature of the ATH-AL5NC is its open-back construction. Unlike closed-back headphones, which seal the rear of the drivers, an open-back design allows air to move between the outside environment and the area around the drivers. Audio-Technica says this can help “reduce heat buildup” during extended listening.
The company also positions the design as a way of producing a more natural sound presentation. Open-back headphones are often favoured by listeners who want a more spacious and less enclosed listening experience. This approach can be particularly appealing for home listening, where outside noise and sound leakage are less of a concern.
Comfort is another design focus. Audio-Technica says the ATH-AL5NC is built with “minimal clamping pressure”, which is intended to reduce pressure around the head during longer listening sessions. The open construction and reduced clamping force could make the headphones suitable for extended use, although individual comfort will still depend on factors such as head shape and personal preference.
The trade-off is that open ear cups naturally let more sound escape. They also let more external sound reach the listener, meaning the ATH-AL5NC cannot provide the same level of passive isolation as a closed-back model. Audio-Technica’s software modes can adjust aspects of the listening experience, but they cannot completely overcome the physical characteristics of an open-back design.
ATH-AL5NC targets home listeners and wireless audio fans
The new headphones are likely best suited to people who primarily listen in relatively quiet environments. Home users, audiophiles, and remote workers may care less about sound leakage than commuters or office workers who need stronger isolation.
Wireless connectivity adds a level of convenience that is not typically associated with traditional open-back headphones. While wired open-back models remain popular among enthusiasts, Bluetooth support means the ATH-AL5NC can be used without a direct connection to a phone, tablet or computer during everyday listening.
At US$279, the ATH-AL5NC sits in the premium section of the open-back headphone market. Its price reflects the combination of large 53mm drivers, high-resolution LDAC support, multipoint Bluetooth, long battery life and app-based controls. It also places the headphones above more affordable alternatives such as the US$150 HyperX Cloud Alpha Air.
Audio-Technica is now offering the ATH-AL5NC for US$279. Each pair includes a 1.2-metre cable for wired use and a carrying pouch. The model gives listeners another open-back option while adding wireless features that make the format more practical for everyday use.
