Bose has announced a major recall affecting hundreds of thousands of battery packs used in its S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ portable PA speakers, following reports of overheating, melting and fire incidents. The recall covers nearly 635,000 lithium-ion battery packs in the United States and approximately 35,400 units in Canada.
The company issued the recall alongside the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), warning customers that affected battery packs could overheat and catch fire. Owners of the affected products have been advised to stop using the recalled batteries immediately to reduce the risk of property damage, fires and burn injuries.
The recall does not affect the speakers themselves. Instead, it focuses specifically on the removable battery packs supplied with or sold separately for the two portable speaker models. Bose is offering free replacement batteries to customers whose products are included in the recall.
Battery defects prompt recall following fire reports
The recall follows seven reported incidents involving Bose S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ battery packs. According to the company and the CPSC, the affected batteries have been reported to melt, produce smoke or catch fire during use.
Six of the seven reported incidents resulted in property damage. However, no injuries have been reported so far. Despite the absence of reported injuries, the potential for overheating and ignition has raised safety concerns, particularly because lithium-ion battery fires can spread quickly and cause significant damage.
The affected products use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which allow the speakers to operate without being connected to a mains power supply. While this feature makes the speakers suitable for mobile performances and outdoor activities, a battery malfunction can create serious safety risks.
Bose has advised customers to stop using any battery pack identified in the recall. Continuing to charge or operate an affected battery could increase the risk of overheating and fire. Customers who are unsure whether their battery is included should check its serial number before using it again.
The recall is intended to address the potential safety issue before additional incidents occur. Bose has also provided instructions for identifying affected batteries and registering for a replacement through its official recall process.
Which Bose S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ batteries are affected?
The recall covers specific battery packs manufactured for the Bose S1 Pro and S1 Pro+ portable PA speaker systems. These products are designed for musicians, performers, event organisers and other users who need portable sound equipment.
Both speakers feature built-in mixers and Bluetooth connectivity, allowing users to connect audio sources and manage sound without requiring extensive additional equipment. Their removable battery packs let users use the speakers in locations where access to electrical outlets may be limited.
The S1 Pro+ also supports wireless microphone and instrument transmitters, which are sold separately for approximately US$159. This makes the model suitable for performances and presentations that require wireless audio connections.
According to the recall announcement, the affected battery packs were sold between December 2017 and July 2026. They were available through Bose, Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart and other retailers in the United States and Canada.
Some battery packs were included with speaker systems, which originally cost approximately US$700, while others were sold separately. Individual replacement battery packs were priced between US$100 and US$160.
However, not every battery pack designed for these speakers is affected. Customers must check the 17-digit serial number printed on the battery to determine whether their unit belongs to a recalled production batch.
The affected batteries have serial numbers beginning with 083723, 078352, 084105, 078591, 078592, 084106 or 086409. Customers whose battery serial numbers match any of these prefixes should register through Bose’s official recall page to request a free replacement.
Bose has also published additional guidance explaining how to remove the battery pack, locate its serial number and complete the replacement registration process.
How customers can request a free replacement battery
Customers who identify an affected battery should stop using it immediately and follow Bose’s recall instructions. The company is providing replacement battery packs at no additional cost to eligible customers.
The recall does not require owners to stop using their S1 Pro or S1 Pro+ speakers entirely. According to the guidance, the speakers can still operate when connected directly to an AC power supply while customers wait for replacement batteries.
This allows musicians, businesses and other users to continue using their audio equipment without relying on the potentially defective battery packs. However, customers should keep the recalled batteries out of use until they have been replaced.
Customers must also take care when disposing of the affected lithium-ion batteries. Bose advises against placing recalled batteries in ordinary household rubbish because damaged or defective lithium-ion cells can present fire hazards during transport and waste processing.
Instead, owners should contact their local household hazardous waste collection centre to obtain instructions on safe disposal. Specialist facilities can provide appropriate handling procedures for rechargeable batteries that may pose a fire risk.
The recall highlights the importance of monitoring battery safety in portable electronic equipment, particularly products designed for extended use away from conventional power sources. Although no injuries have been reported in the Bose incidents, the seven reported cases demonstrate the potential consequences of battery failures.
Affected customers are encouraged to verify their battery serial numbers and complete the replacement process as soon as possible. Bose has made the recall information and registration instructions available through its official website.
