Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 confirmed for Switch 2 launch
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October, marking the franchise’s long-awaited debut on Switch 2.
Activision has officially announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, marking the return of Infinity Ward’s popular Modern Warfare series after a three-year break. While annual Call of Duty releases have become a familiar part of the gaming calendar, this latest entry stands out for a significant reason: it will be the first mainline Call of Duty title to launch on a Nintendo platform in more than a decade.

The game is scheduled to arrive on 23 October for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Its release on Nintendo’s newest console represents the franchise’s debut on the platform. It signals the first major outcome of the long-term agreement Microsoft and Nintendo reached in 2023 to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo systems.
The announcement also highlights a broader shift for the series. Modern Warfare 4 will not be released on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, making it the first mainline Call of Duty title of the current console generation to abandon older hardware fully. Activision has also confirmed that Call of Duty: Warzone will cease support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.
Nintendo’s debut signals a new era for the franchise
Infinity Ward is leading development of Modern Warfare 4, with support from Digital Legends, a studio known for its mobile gaming. Together, the teams are creating a native version of the game for Switch 2 rather than relying on cloud streaming technology.
The arrival of Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware is one of the most notable developments surrounding the release. The franchise has not appeared on a Nintendo console since 2013, making the Switch 2 version a significant milestone for both Activision and Nintendo.
By focusing exclusively on current-generation hardware, Infinity Ward will be able to leverage more powerful technology across all platforms. This approach is expected to support enhanced visuals, improved performance and more advanced gameplay systems than were possible on ageing consoles.
The PC edition will also feature several platform-specific performance improvements. Although Activision has not yet detailed these upgrades, the company says more information will be shared closer to launch.
Campaign returns with a global conflict
The single-player campaign places players in the role of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier experiencing active combat for the first time. The story begins with a North Korean invasion of South Korea, drawing players into a large-scale military conflict that expands across several countries.
According to Infinity Ward, the campaign will take players to locations including New York, Paris and Mumbai. The developer is promising the cinematic storytelling, large-scale battles and covert operations that have become hallmarks of the Modern Warfare series.
Returning character Captain Price will also play a central role in the story. This time, he is portrayed as an outlaw pursuing a personal mission of revenge. His journey leads him towards what Infinity Ward describes as “a weapon powerful enough to shift the balance of power, setting in motion a conflict far greater than he even anticipated.”
The campaign is expected to combine dramatic action sequences with more tactical missions. While further story details remain under wraps, the narrative appears to continue the series’ focus on modern geopolitical conflicts and high-stakes military operations.
Multiplayer aims to deliver more realistic combat
As with previous Call of Duty releases, multiplayer is expected to be a major attraction for players. Infinity Ward says Modern Warfare 4 introduces “a new weapon-first technology stack that unifies precision aiming, physical handling, realistic audio propagation, enhanced visibility, and smarter combat perception into the most authentic Modern Warfare gunplay yet.”
The studio is placing particular emphasis on weapon behaviour and movement. Developers say firearms will react more naturally to changes in player stance and surrounding environments, helping create a more realistic combat experience.
At launch, Modern Warfare 4 will include 12 core multiplayer maps. Popular modes such as Search and Destroy and Domination will return, while several new multiplayer experiences are also planned. Infinity Ward has said additional details about these modes will be revealed in the coming weeks.
The DMZ extraction shooter mode, which has built a dedicated following in recent years, will also make a return. Further information about its features and updates is expected before release.
Despite Microsoft’s ownership of Activision, the publisher has confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will not be available on Game Pass on its launch day. This decision differs from expectations some players may have had following the company’s recent adjustments to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass pricing.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on 23 October for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.
