Devolver Digital sets GTA 6 release-day challenge with Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed

Devolver Digital is preparing to go head-to-head with one of the biggest video game launches in history, announcing that its colourful mascot platformer Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed will arrive on the same day as Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6.

While many publishers have been careful to avoid launching major titles anywhere near GTA 6, Devolver Digital has taken the opposite approach. The publisher has previously suggested that it intended to release a game alongside Rockstar’s highly anticipated open-world title, and it has now confirmed the details of that plan.

Volvy returns in a remastered platforming adventure

Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed is being described as a remaster of an “unreleased action-platformer” featuring Volvy, Devolver Digital’s distinctive mascot. Doinksoft is developing the game, and its previous release, Dark Scrolls, was a roguelike platformer known for fast-paced gameplay and stylised visuals.

The newly revealed footage shows Volvy battling through colourful stages, using a giant fist to attack enemies and break through obstacles. Players will also be able to collect onions, uncover hidden areas and search for secrets scattered throughout the levels.

One of the game’s more unusual features is Volvy’s ability to transform into a much more muscular version of himself known as Swolvy. The transformation appears to give the character additional strength, adding another layer to the platforming and combat.

The story follows Volvy as he attempts to rescue his kidnapped friends and put an end to a group of warlocks responsible for unleashing slime across the world. Between the main stages, players will also encounter a selection of minigames designed to provide a change of pace.

The game’s presentation shares some similarities with Doinksoft’s previous work, combining a retro-inspired platforming structure with a deliberately playful visual style. That approach fits closely with Devolver Digital’s reputation for unusual characters, irreverent humour and distinctive independent games.

Devolver embraces the GTA 6 release date

The decision to release Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed on the same day as GTA 6 is particularly notable because Rockstar’s game is expected to dominate the gaming market at launch. GTA 6 has been one of the industry’s most anticipated releases for years, with many players expected to focus heavily on it during its launch period.

Rather than competing directly for the same audience, Devolver appears to be positioning Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed as a much smaller, more accessible alternative. The game will be available on PC through Steam, meaning players will not need to purchase a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S to play it.

The timing could also help Devolver attract players interested in trying something different while the wider industry focuses on Rockstar’s blockbuster. Although the two games occupy very different genres and price points, releasing alongside GTA 6 gives Volvy’s Adventure considerable novelty value.

The wider release calendar may also work in Devolver’s favour. While several games are scheduled to arrive over the coming weeks, the latter part of the year currently has fewer major releases than might normally be expected. GTA 6 has influenced how publishers approach the release calendar, with some developers likely to avoid competing directly with Rockstar’s title.

There is also speculation that other major releases could appear around the same period, including a possible remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. However, release plans can change, making the final competitive landscape difficult to predict.

Volvy’s Adventure targets PC players at a low price

Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed is scheduled to launch on Steam on 19 November for US$5, putting it firmly in the budget-friendly category. Devolver Digital is also planning a 25 per cent launch discount, which will make the game even cheaper during its initial promotional period.

The low price could be one of the game’s strongest advantages when it arrives alongside GTA 6. Players who aren’t interested in buying new console hardware, or who want a smaller game to play alongside the year’s biggest release, may find the inexpensive platformer an appealing option.

For Devolver Digital, the launch also fits the publisher’s long-running willingness to take unconventional approaches to the video game market. Releasing a small indie platformer against GTA 6 would be a risky strategy for a publisher trying to maximise traditional launch visibility, but the contrast could also generate substantial attention.

The game’s mascot-driven concept, simple premise and low entry price give it a very different proposition from Rockstar’s enormous open-world production. Whether Volvy can gain meaningful attention while GTA 6 dominates headlines remains to be seen, but Devolver has ensured that its release will not be easy to overlook.

With its 19 November launch date confirmed, Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed is shaping up as one of the more unusual games to enter the market alongside GTA 6. For PC players looking for a compact platforming experience rather than another sprawling blockbuster, Devolver’s unlikely release-day challenger could provide an alternative.
