Discord is testing a new Game Mode designed to reduce the social platform’s CPU and GPU usage while users are playing games. The experimental feature is intended to free up system resources, potentially allowing games and other applications to run more smoothly at the same time.

The company confirmed on X that the feature is expected to begin rolling out to users next week. Discord also indicated that the trial could be the first step towards additional features aimed at reducing the platform’s resource consumption.

Discord prepares new Game Mode

Screenshots of a new Game Mode setting began appearing on social media over the weekend, giving users an early look at the feature before Discord officially confirmed its plans. The setting is described as an option that reduces the resources Discord uses while a game is running.

The toggle description states that it will “Reduce Discord’s CPU and GPU usage while a game is running.” The change is intended to reduce the processing power and graphics resources Discord uses while another demanding application is active.

For PC gamers, reducing background resource usage can be useful when running modern games that already place heavy demands on a computer’s processor and graphics card. Discord is commonly used alongside games for voice chat, messaging and community features, meaning both applications can compete for system resources.

Discord said on X that Game Mode is an experimental feature and will begin rolling out next week. The company also said it is “aiming to add more resource-saving features over time”, suggesting that the initial mode could form part of a wider effort to improve the platform’s efficiency.

Why Discord can use significant system resources

Discord is built with Electron, a framework that lets developers create desktop applications using web technologies. Electron combines technologies such as JavaScript and Chromium, the open-source browser engine that also underpins Google Chrome and several other browsers.

Using Electron allows Discord to maintain a common development approach across different desktop platforms. However, applications built around browser technologies can consume considerable system resources, particularly when they include features such as animations, media, voice communication, and continuously updating content.

Chromium itself is not generally regarded as the lightest technology for applications where resource efficiency is a priority. As a result, Discord’s architecture can create challenges when the application is running alongside graphically demanding games or other intensive software.

Game Mode appears to address some of those concerns without requiring Discord to replace its underlying technology. By reducing CPU and GPU activity while a game is active, the platform could free up more resources for the game itself.

The impact could vary depending on the computer, game and other applications running at the same time. Systems with powerful processors and graphics cards may see little practical difference, while machines operating closer to their hardware limits could potentially benefit more from reduced background activity.

Discord plans more resource-saving features

The planned rollout comes as Discord continues to serve as a central communication platform for PC gamers, who frequently keep the application open while playing. Even relatively small reductions in background resource usage could help improve overall system performance when a game is particularly demanding.

The company has not yet provided detailed technical information about exactly how Game Mode will reduce CPU and GPU usage. It is therefore unclear which Discord features will be limited, paused or adjusted when the mode is active, or how much resource consumption users can expect to save.

The feature is also unlikely to eliminate all of the performance overhead associated with Discord’s Electron-based architecture. While optimisations can reduce the resources the application requires, there may be limits to how far the platform can be streamlined without broader changes to its underlying technology.

Discord’s comment that it is “aiming to add more resource-saving features over time” indicates that the company is considering further improvements beyond the initial Game Mode release. The upcoming rollout should allow Discord to assess how the feature performs in real-world use and whether additional optimisations are needed.

For now, Game Mode remains an experimental feature rather than a complete redesign of Discord’s desktop application. Its effectiveness will become clearer once it reaches users and is tested across the range of games and PC configurations where Discord is commonly used.
