Garmin adds Pokémon Sleep watch faces to Connect IQ as part of sleep tracking push
Garmin adds Pokémon Sleep watch faces to its smartwatches, linking energy tracking with animated visuals and app integration.
Garmin has introduced a set of Pokémon Sleep-themed watch faces for its smartwatch lineup, positioning the update as part of its broader focus on sleep tracking and daily energy monitoring. The new watch faces are available as a free download through the Connect IQ Store for selected devices, including fēnix, Forerunner, Venu and vívoactive models.

The release ties into World Sleep Day and builds on Garmin’s existing Body Battery feature, which tracks user energy levels throughout the day. Rather than adding new hardware or core functionality, the update uses visual engagement to reinforce existing metrics, linking sleep behaviour with familiar gaming characters.
Watch faces reflect energy levels in real time
The new watch faces are designed to change dynamically based on a user’s Body Battery energy levels. Pokémon characters displayed on the watch face shift between different states, ranging from active and alert to tired and sleepy, depending on the user’s energy throughout the day.
Two main options are available. The “Pokémon Sleep: Snorlax & Friends” watch face features a group of Pokémon including Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu and Snorlax, set within Greengrass Isle. The second option, “Pokémon Sleep: I Choose You”, allows users to select a single Pokémon from a pool of 48 characters.
This approach shifts how Garmin presents its health data. Instead of relying solely on numerical metrics or graphs, the company is using character-driven visual cues to communicate changes in user condition. The underlying data remains the same, but the interface becomes more interpretive and accessible.
For users already familiar with Body Battery, the watch face acts as an ambient indicator rather than a primary data interface. For newer users, it offers a more intuitive way to understand how energy levels fluctuate during the day.
Sleep preparation tied to user behaviour
The watch faces also incorporate a timed night mode that activates 1.5 hours before the user’s scheduled sleep time, as set in the Garmin Connect app. This feature introduces a behavioural prompt, encouraging users to wind down ahead of sleep rather than treating sleep tracking as a passive activity.
While the functionality is relatively simple, it reflects a broader shift in wearable design. Devices are increasingly positioned as behavioural tools, guiding routines rather than only recording them. In this case, the transition to night mode aligns with Garmin’s attempt to connect daytime energy tracking with sleep preparation.
The execution remains dependent on user settings and consistency. Without accurate sleep schedules or active engagement with the Garmin Connect app, the feature’s effectiveness is likely to be limited.
Integration with Pokémon Sleep extends ecosystem link
Garmin has also enabled compatibility between selected devices and the Pokémon Sleep mobile app, allowing users to sync sleep data between platforms. This integration expands the role of Garmin devices beyond fitness tracking, linking them into a broader entertainment-led ecosystem.
Pokémon Sleep itself is positioned as a gamified sleep tracking experience, where users track their sleep and interact with Pokémon based on their sleep patterns. By supporting data syncing, Garmin devices can act as a data source for the app, reducing reliance on smartphones or standalone accessories.
However, the integration is framed primarily as an entertainment feature rather than a health tool. The release notes that Pokémon Sleep is not intended for medical use, which limits how the data can be interpreted or applied in a clinical context.
For Garmin, the partnership introduces a different user segment, particularly those who may not engage deeply with traditional fitness metrics. It also reflects a broader trend of wearables intersecting with consumer entertainment, where engagement is driven as much by experience design as by data accuracy.
Connect IQ remains the distribution layer
The watch faces are distributed through the Connect IQ Store, Garmin’s platform for downloadable apps, watch faces and services. The store supports a wide range of customisations and is accessible via both Google Play and the Apple App Store.
This reinforces Connect IQ as a central layer in Garmin’s ecosystem strategy. Rather than embedding all functionality at the device level, Garmin continues to rely on its app platform to extend capabilities and personalise user experience.
The availability of Pokémon Sleep watch faces within Connect IQ also highlights the platform’s role in enabling partnerships and branded content. For developers and partners, the store provides a route to integrate experiences directly into Garmin’s device base without requiring hardware changes.
From a product perspective, this approach allows Garmin to introduce new features and collaborations at a lower cost and faster cadence. For users, it expands device utility without requiring upgrades.
Positioning engagement within existing capabilities
The introduction of Pokémon Sleep watch faces does not change Garmin’s core hardware or health tracking capabilities. Instead, it reframes how those capabilities are presented and experienced.
By linking Body Battery data to animated characters and integrating with a gamified sleep app, Garmin is placing more emphasis on engagement and behaviour. The move suggests an attempt to broaden appeal beyond performance-focused users to a more general audience.
At the same time, the reliance on existing metrics means the update does not introduce new insights or measurement capabilities. Its value lies in how it encourages interaction with features that are already present.
The effectiveness of this approach will depend on whether users see the added layer as meaningful or superficial. For some, the visualisation may improve understanding and consistency. For others, it may remain a cosmetic enhancement.
