Insta360 X6 adds larger sensors, 8K50 video and on-device AI editing

Insta360 has launched its new flagship 360 camera, the X6. The device debuts with expanded image sensors, native 8K50fps video capability, and automated AI tools that generate initial edits while plugged into a charger.

The release coincides with the manufacturer celebrating ten years in the panoramic camera sector. According to market data from IDC cited by the company, Insta360 secured a 71% share by value of the global panoramic camera market in the first quarter of 2026.

At the core of the X6 are two custom Sony 1/1.1-inch square sensors, which Insta360 describes as delivering full 1-inch-equivalent 360-degree imaging performance. When measured against the predecessor X5, the updated sensors offer 33% more surface area and gather roughly four times as much light per frame. Overall performance and image calculations are driven by a robust architecture comprising an eight-core 3.3GHz processor alongside two dedicated imaging chips.

Larger sensors target difficult lighting

The camera captures full 360-degree video at frame rates reaching 8K50fps. Recording in all directions means creators can freely reframe and alter their perspective during editing, removing the necessity to lock in a fixed shot composition while shooting.

To maintain picture fidelity across demanding environments, the X6 supports 10-bit colour capable of capturing over 1.07 billion recordable colours alongside direct in-camera Dolby Vision recording. Dynamic range performance gets a boost from AdaptiveTone 2.0, which evaluates both lenses separately to capture two distinct exposures per frame, improving contrast between bright highlights and deep shadows. In low-light conditions, a specialised mode utilises two dedicated ambient light sensors to suppress image flicker effectively.

Beyond panoramic video, the unit functions as a conventional action camera in single-lens mode at up to 5K60fps. Creators can also select a 170-degree wide-angle view at 5K30fps or record slow-motion footage in 4K at 120fps.

For users needing traditional flat video, InstaFrame 2.0 generates 4K files straight from the hardware while automatically tracking people, pets, and objects. When combined with the Foldable Selfie Stick Remote Kit, the setup introduces joystick-guided subject tracking that mirrors the stability and control of a handheld gimbal.

AI editing begins while the camera charges

Software intelligence is anchored by Insta360 PanoMind, representing the brand’s initial AI model built from the ground up for 360-degree media. The company trained this neural model on over 10,000 hours of video spanning more than 30 activities, including travel, cycling, motorcycling, diving, and winter sports.

PanoMind drives AI Director, an automated tool that analyses raw footage stored on the X6 while the camera is connected to a charger to compile highlight edits for transfer to the Insta360 application. Because all image processing is performed directly on the camera hardware rather than remote cloud servers, processing stays local. Operators who prefer complete manual control retain full ability to turn off the feature.

“X6 is the camera we always wanted to build. It captures everything around you, in any light, and hands you a finished edit before you even reach for your phone,” said JK Liu, founder of Insta360.

For refined creative output, Auto Edit 2.0 automates framing choices, camera moves, cuts, background tracks, and transitions across single or multiple video files. Subscribers to the Insta360+ platform gain access to Moments Pro, a cloud-assisted editing suite integrated with Google Gemini that generates completed videos based on user prompts specifying subject matter, mood, aesthetic style, and target timeline.

For production workflows requiring professional colour grading, the device offers I-Log and 10-bit recording options. Desktop users can continue relying on Insta360 Studio for Mac and Windows to handle stitching, clip editing, and final 360 exports.

Battery life and accessories expand

Power is supplied by a 2,600mAh battery that delivers up to 140 minutes of continuous 8K30fps 360 recording, marking a 51% increase over the X5 according to the manufacturer. Rapid charging restores the battery from depleted to 80% capacity in 24 minutes.

Internal storage stands at 64GB with 47GB of usable space, enabling users to capture footage directly without inserting an SD card. Physical durability extends underwater, with the housing rated waterproof down to 20 metres without a case, extending to 60 metres when paired with the Invisible Dive Case Pro.

The user-replaceable lens elements have undergone structural revisions as well. Insta360 states these updated covers are five times more scratch-resistant and 60% cheaper to replace than the previous generation.

An ecosystem of more than 100 dedicated accessories covers handheld filming, driving, cycling, motorcycling, diving, and extended recording sessions. The camera retains a magnetic mounting layout fully compatible with mounts designed for the X5, X4 Air, and Ace series, removing the requirement for existing Insta360 users to replace compatible mounting equipment.

Additional hardware specifications include a 2.32-inch OLED display alongside FlowState stabilisation and 360 Horizon Lock capabilities. Connections and audio capture are handled via Wi-Fi 6.0, NFC connectivity, USB 3.0, and a four-microphone omnidirectional array.

Retail sales launched on 12 August through the Insta360 Store, Shopee, Lazada, and selected retailers, with availability in some markets to follow. In Singapore, pricing starts at S$939 for the Standard Bundle and S$1,039 for the Essentials Bundle.
