iPhone 17 Pro may feature a new scratch-resistant, anti-reflective display

iPhone 17 Pro may debut with an anti-reflective, scratch-resistant display, joining Apple’s premium iPad and Mac screens.

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro could feature a special anti-reflective display that also offers better protection against scratches. If this happens, you’ll see the iPhone lineup join the iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, and iMac in having a display that reduces glare and reflections—something that can make a real difference when using your device outdoors or under bright lights.

Anti-reflective display ready for mass production

According to a trusted source speaking to MacRumors, Apple suppliers have finally reached a point where they can produce the anti-reflective display glass in large quantities. You may recall that Apple had planned to launch this feature last year, but was unable to do so due to issues with applying the anti-reflective coating during production. With those issues now sorted, the iPhone 17 Pro is likely to debut this improved screen.

The new display isn’t just about reducing reflections; it’s also about enhancing the viewing experience. It’s also expected to be more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield found in the current iPhone 16 models. Apple claims that the Ceramic Shield is already 50% stronger than the one used before it, and twice as tough as the glass used in any other smartphone on the market. So, if the new version lives up to the reports, you could be looking at Apple’s most durable display yet.

A feature borrowed from iPads and Macs

You might already be familiar with Apple’s nano-texture display if you’ve used a recent iPad Pro, MacBook Pro, or iMac. This display technology works by scattering ambient light, which helps reduce glare. It’s a handy feature if you often find yourself struggling to see your screen clearly in bright settings.

We had the chance to try out the new iPad Pro (M4) with the nano-texture display at its launch event. The results were promising—there was less glare and reflection, but this came at the cost of a slight drop in image sharpness and contrast. Whether the same trade-off will apply to the iPhone 17 Pro remains to be seen, but it’s something you’ll want to consider if you care about display clarity.

Launch expected in early September

You won’t have to wait long to find out more. Apple is expected to hold a launch event during the week of September 8, where it’s likely to introduce the iPhone 17 lineup officially. If rumours are accurate, the iPhone 17 Pro will be the first smartphone from Apple to come with a screen that combines anti-reflective properties and enhanced scratch resistance, potentially making it one of the most user-friendly iPhones to date.

Whether you’re someone who uses your phone outdoors often or wants a screen that can better stand up to daily wear and tear, this could be one of the iPhone 17 Pro’s most useful upgrades. Keep an eye out for more official news as the event draws near.
