JBL Pulse 6 brings 360-degree lighting and upgraded sound to portable speakers

JBL is expanding its portable speaker range with the Pulse 6, a new model designed to combine wireless audio with an eye-catching 360-degree light show. The speaker is positioned as a portable entertainment device, with a lantern-inspired design and a range of built-in lighting effects aimed at both relaxed listening and parties.

The JBL Pulse 6 is priced at US$330 and is available for pre-order. Shipping is expected to begin on 6 September. The new model follows the previous generation in JBL’s Pulse range, which was last refreshed in 2022, and introduces changes to both its lighting system and acoustic design.
A portable speaker built around lighting
The Pulse 6’s most distinctive feature is its ability to produce a 360-degree light show. Its integrated handle gives the speaker the appearance of a traditional lantern. Still, the design houses a modern lighting system intended to make the device part of the visual atmosphere as well as the audio experience.
JBL has included 16 pre-programmed lighting themes, divided between ambient and party-focused effects. Ten themes are designed for mood lighting, while six are aimed at parties and more energetic settings. This gives users several ways to customise the speaker’s appearance without creating lighting effects from scratch.
The Pulse 6 can also be used as part of a larger JBL lighting setup. It can connect with compatible PartyBox speakers and JBL’s PartyLight Stick, allowing multiple devices to work together for a more extensive light display. The speaker can additionally synchronise audio with other compatible JBL products using Auracast, making it possible to create a more connected listening experience across supported devices.
JBL upgrades the audio system
Beyond its lighting features, JBL has updated the Pulse 6’s acoustic design to deliver more balanced sound than earlier models. The changes are significant for a product line that hasn’t received a major refresh since 2022, giving the new speaker a chance to compete with newer portable models in an increasingly crowded Bluetooth speaker market.
The Pulse 6 also includes JBL’s AI Sound Boost technology. The system is designed to improve acoustic performance while reducing distortion, particularly when the speaker is being pushed at higher volumes. JBL is positioning the technology as a way to make the speaker sound more capable without relying solely on conventional hardware improvements.
The combination of upgraded acoustics and visual effects makes the Pulse 6 different from a standard portable Bluetooth speaker. Rather than focusing exclusively on sound quality, the device is designed to serve as both an audio system and a decorative light for social gatherings, outdoor activities and other occasions where appearance is part of the experience.
Battery life and durability for portable use
JBL says the Pulse 6 can provide up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. That gives users enough capacity for extended listening sessions, although actual battery performance can vary depending on factors such as volume level and the use of its lighting features.
The speaker also carries an IP68 rating, protecting against dust and water. This rating makes the Pulse 6 more suitable for outdoor use, where portable speakers can be exposed to water, dirt, and other environmental conditions. The combination of battery life and durability supports the speaker’s positioning as a device that can be moved between indoor and outdoor settings.
At US$330, the Pulse 6 sits above many conventional portable Bluetooth speakers and places greater emphasis on its integrated lighting system and compatibility with other JBL products. Its appeal will therefore depend not only on sound quality, but also on whether buyers value the ability to turn a portable speaker into part of a larger lighting and entertainment setup.
