Unreleased Xbox Elite Controller 3 may have reached a buyer by mistake
An alleged buyer may have received Microsoft’s unreleased Xbox Elite Controller 3, revealing possible features before its official launch.
Microsoft’s unreleased Xbox Elite Controller 3 may have accidentally reached the hands of a buyer who was reportedly trying to purchase the existing Elite Controller 2. The alleged incident comes only months after images of the unannounced controller appeared online, reportedly through an accidental regulatory leak in Brazil.

The device was reportedly purchased through the OfferUp mobile marketplace app. The buyer, who appears to have been unaware that the controller could be a new, unreleased model, posted photographs on Reddit, asking other users to identify it. Microsoft has not officially announced or released the Xbox Elite Controller 3, making the alleged sale particularly notable.
Reddit post raises questions about the mystery controller
Reddit user ssuberlex shared photographs of the controller on r/Controller, asking whether it could be the unreleased Xbox Elite Controller 3. The post quickly attracted attention from users who compared the photographs with images that had previously appeared online.
Several commenters concluded that the controller appeared to match the model shown in the earlier leaked images. Comparisons with existing Xbox controllers also appeared to support the possibility that the device was a previously unseen Elite model rather than a standard Elite Controller 2.
The Reddit poster reportedly said that the controller could not connect to an Xbox, either wirelessly or using a cable. That detail led some commenters to speculate that the unit could have originated from a development kit or another pre-release testing environment. However, there is no independent confirmation of the controller’s origin, and Microsoft has not commented on the alleged incident.
The original poster has since deleted their Reddit account. Images from the post continue to circulate, including one photograph that reportedly shows a screen with a URL displayed at the top of the controller. The images have added to speculation surrounding the device, although they do not by themselves establish how the controller was obtained or whether it represents a final retail version.
Leaked details suggest a significant controller upgrade
The alleged appearance of the Elite Controller 3 follows an earlier incident in May, when Brazil’s telecommunications regulator Anatel appeared to publish images of the unreleased Xbox accessory. The images provided an early look at a controller that seemed to introduce several changes compared with Microsoft’s existing premium Xbox controller.
Reports cited by IGN have suggested that the next-generation Elite controller could include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth connectivity. It is also expected to retain features aimed at more advanced players, including trigger locks and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
Another reported addition is a pair of scroll wheels, which could provide users with additional ways to interact with the controller. The device is also said to feature a redesigned pair button that could allow users to switch more quickly between local gaming and cloud gaming. If accurate, the changes would give the Elite Controller 3 broader connectivity and functionality than previous models.
Microsoft has not confirmed these specifications, and the alleged unit shown online may not represent the final hardware. Pre-release development devices can differ from products eventually sold to consumers, particularly in software, connectivity, and external design.
Microsoft has yet to announce the Elite Controller 3
The potential opening of a retail or development unit would be significant, as Microsoft has not released a new Xbox Elite controller since 2022. The Elite Series 2 remains the company’s current premium Xbox controller, making a successor increasingly notable after several years without a new model.
An accidental delivery would also be unusual, particularly if the buyer genuinely ordered an Elite Controller 2 through a second-hand marketplace. If the photographs are authentic, the incident could provide another indication that Microsoft is preparing a new Elite controller. However, it does not specify when an official announcement or release might occur.
For now, the Xbox Elite Controller 3 remains unofficial. The regulatory images from Brazil, the photographs shared on Reddit and the reported specifications offer clues about what Microsoft may be developing, but none of them replaces an official announcement. Until Microsoft confirms the product, its final design, features, pricing and availability remain unknown.
The alleged marketplace sale also highlights the risks surrounding pre-release hardware, which can sometimes reach consumers before manufacturers are ready to reveal their products. If Microsoft is indeed preparing the Elite Controller 3, further leaks could emerge before the company formally introduces the controller.
