WEX and Mastercard have entered into a partnership to develop a unified fleet payments network across Asia-Pacific, bringing fuel purchases, vehicle maintenance, tolls, parking and wider business expenses into a single payment experience. Both companies describe the planned network as the first of its kind in the region.
Under the initiative, WEX’s fleet management and commercial payments experience will be combined with Mastercard’s global payments network. As the programme expands across key regional markets, the companies project that the network will process billions of dollars in annual transactions.
One account for fleet and business expenses
Fleet managers frequently deal with separate payment systems for fuel, maintenance, tolls and parking, requiring them to combine transaction records and reconcile multiple invoices. The proposed network is designed to bring those costs together with other business expenditure, providing organisations with a consolidated picture of fleet and company spending.
Alongside centralised billing, the companies plan real-time, configurable spending controls and automated insights integrated into business workflows. Detailed reporting would capture individual transaction details, including fuel types and volumes purchased in litres, allowing fleet managers to examine specific purchases alongside their overall expenditure through the same system.
WEX and Mastercard also plan to support traditional fuel-powered, hybrid and electric vehicles under one account, with a consolidated invoice covering their running costs. This arrangement would allow operators to manage payments across mixed-energy fleets.
Matt Arthur, vice president and general manager, APAC Mobility at WEX, linked the proposed arrangements to the operational demands of mixed-energy fleets. “For decades, fleets have used one card for fuel and a patchwork of systems for everything else, leaving fleet managers to stitch it all together. This strategic partnership creates a smarter infrastructure that allows our customers to manage the transition to hybrid fleets and navigate economic volatility with total visibility over their operations,” Arthur said.
Asia-Pacific fleet-card spending projected to grow
Asia-Pacific fleet-card transaction volumes were estimated at approximately US$310 billion in 2025, equivalent to 31% of global fleet-card volumes, according to industry figures cited by the companies. Regional transaction volumes are projected to grow by 14.3% annually through 2030.
The companies also cited estimates identifying Asia-Pacific as the world’s fastest-growing fleet management region, with the broader market projected to grow by approximately 18% annually through 2030. Alongside that expansion, WEX and Mastercard identified fragmented payment data and separate legacy systems as continuing operational difficulties for fleet managers.
Partnership builds on existing payments infrastructure
The initiative extends a relationship between WEX and Mastercard spanning decades. For its part, WEX brings more than 40 years of fleet management experience, alongside its established business in virtual cards for travel and corporate payments.
According to WEX’s internal data and industry benchmarks, the company ranks first globally by volume of virtual card payments in the travel sector and accounts for 50% of that market’s virtual card payments. WEX also says it is trusted by eight of the ten leading travel intermediaries.
Mastercard’s global network processed 175 billion transactions in 2025, according to financial reporting cited in the announcement. In the same year, WEX processed more than US$237 billion in total volume across its Mobility, Corporate Payments and Benefits businesses.
