Anthropic plans up to 2GW AMD GPU deployment as AMD commits up to US$5 billion
Anthropic plans to deploy up to 2GW of AMD Instinct GPUs as the companies expand software work and AMD pledges up to US$5 billion.
AMD and Anthropic have agreed on a comprehensive computing, software, and investment partnership that could see Anthropic deploy up to 2GW of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs. The first gigawatt is scheduled to begin deployment in the first half of 2027 using AMD Helios rack-scale systems.

In tandem, AMD has committed to make a future equity investment of up to US$5 billion in Anthropic. The agreement provides Anthropic with crucial additional computing infrastructure for Claude while expanding AMD’s involvement into workload optimisation, software development, and equity ownership in the AI company.
Anthropic expands the computing infrastructure behind Claude
Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy Helios systems featuring Instinct MI455X GPUs, which form part of AMD’s MI450 Series. These systems will also utilise AMD EPYC “Venice” processors, Pensando networking, and ROCm software.
The planned deployment builds directly on Anthropic’s existing use of AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs. It will increase the scale of that relationship considerably, starting with an initial installation covering 1GW and allowing the broader agreement to reach a total capacity of 2GW.
Anthropic intends to use this additional infrastructure to train and run Claude as customer demand grows. The company also aims to distribute workloads across different hardware platforms, allowing individual computational tasks to be matched with suitable hardware systems.
“Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers,” said Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer at Anthropic. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimising it for training and serving Claude. Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.”
Joint engineering work will focus on Claude and ROCm
The infrastructure deployment will be accompanied by a multi-year engineering programme. Technical teams from both companies will work on optimising Claude workloads for AMD Instinct GPUs and accelerating the development of ROCm, the software platform used to run applications on AMD graphics processors.
This collaborative initiative connects the physical hardware deployment with the underlying software required to operate Claude seamlessly on AMD systems. Anthropic will also be able to adapt its workloads for the Helios platform, while AMD gains valuable feedback from a major AI model developer using its hardware at gigawatt scale.
Additionally, AMD plans to adopt Claude across its own engineering and product development teams. Anthropic will therefore use AMD systems to support Claude, while AMD applies Claude within parts of its internal development process.
AMD adds an equity commitment
AMD’s proposed investment creates a direct financial link between the two companies alongside the computing and engineering agreements. The chipmaker has committed to make an equity investment of up to US$5 billion in Anthropic at a future date.
The official announcement describes the investment as a commitment rather than a completed transaction. The overarching relationship currently covers three defined areas, namely Anthropic’s planned deployment of AMD infrastructure, joint development work around Claude and ROCm, and AMD’s intended equity investment in Anthropic.
