Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce redesigned MacBook Pro laptops and an updated iPad mini at a hardware launch event expected towards the end of October. The announcement could bring major changes to the company’s laptop lineup, including touchscreen OLED displays and processor upgrades for other Mac computers.
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, Apple is considering holding an event on or around 27 October. The launch could feature new MacBook Pro models, updated Mac computers and a redesigned iPad mini. Apple has not yet confirmed the event or officially announced the products.
The reported launch would be particularly notable for the MacBook Pro, which could receive one of its most substantial redesigns in several years. The touchscreen models were initially expected to arrive in late 2025, but development priorities and supply-chain delays reportedly pushed the release back. The latest information suggests the redesigned laptops are nearing their expected debut.
MacBook Pro could introduce touchscreen OLED displays
The redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to be the main attractions at the reported event. Internally identified by the codenames K114 and K116, the laptops could introduce touchscreen OLED displays, marking a significant shift in Apple’s approach to professional notebooks.
Apple has traditionally maintained that MacBooks work best with a keyboard and trackpad rather than direct screen input. Adding touchscreen functionality would depart from that position and bring the MacBook Pro closer to the interaction methods already available on the iPhone and iPad.
The reported OLED upgrade could also improve the visual experience. Compared with conventional LCD technology, OLED displays can produce deeper blacks because individual pixels can switch off completely. This can improve contrast and make dark scenes appear more detailed, potentially benefiting video editors, photographers and other professionals who rely on accurate visual presentation.
The new laptops could also feature an interface element similar to the Dynamic Island found on recent iPhones. This would represent another change to the MacBook Pro’s design and could provide a more integrated way to display certain notifications and background activities. However, the precise implementation and functionality remain unconfirmed.
Apple is also reportedly developing an updated version of macOS, referred to as macOS Golden Gate, with improvements intended to make the operating system more suitable for touch input. These changes could help users switch between traditional desktop controls and direct display interaction without needing a completely different operating system.
Physical design changes are also expected. The new MacBook Pro models could be significantly lighter than their predecessors, making them easier to carry between workplaces and meetings. However, the laptops may not get noticeably thinner, suggesting Apple could prioritise weight reduction and internal hardware changes over reducing overall thickness.
Despite the growing number of reported details, Apple has not confirmed the touchscreen MacBook Pro’s specifications, design, or release date. The final products could differ from current expectations, especially as the company continues to prepare for launch.
M6-powered Macs could bring performance improvements
Alongside the redesigned MacBook Pro, Apple is reportedly preparing processor upgrades for other Macs. These could include a 14-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac with M6 processors, though both products are expected to retain their current external designs.
The strategy would let Apple introduce newer silicon without substantially changing the appearance of these machines. Processor upgrades can improve performance and efficiency while giving users a reason to consider newer hardware, especially for demanding applications or complex workloads.
For the 14-inch MacBook Pro, an M6 processor could offer an additional option for users who want better performance but don’t necessarily need the touchscreen OLED redesign expected in higher-profile models. However, the reported plans do not indicate whether the upgraded machine would launch alongside the redesigned laptops or follow a different release schedule.
The iMac could receive similar treatment. By retaining its current design while adopting a newer processor, Apple could refresh its all-in-one desktop computer without introducing an entirely new product. The extent of the performance improvements, memory configurations and other technical changes has not yet been confirmed.
Apple is also reportedly preparing an updated iPad mini for the event, with an OLED display expected to be one of its biggest upgrades. The tablet could feature an A20 Pro chip, a relocated FaceTime camera and a redesigned speaker system.
Moving to OLED technology would bring the smaller iPad closer to the display capabilities reportedly planned for the new MacBook Pro models. The technology could improve contrast and colour, while the updated processor could add computing power for apps, games, and everyday tasks.
Relocating the FaceTime camera could also indicate changes to the tablet’s internal layout or how it is intended to be used during video calls. Meanwhile, the redesigned speaker system could improve audio performance, although Apple has not provided any official details about the expected changes.
iPad mini price could increase as Apple prepares its next launches
The reported iPad mini redesign could come with a considerable price increase. Gurman estimates the updated tablet could start at around US$799, up from the current starting price of US$599. This would represent an increase of US$200, or approximately 33 per cent, if the estimate proves accurate.
The projected price remains unconfirmed and should not be treated as Apple’s final retail pricing. The reported OLED display, updated processor, and other hardware changes could drive a higher price, although the precise reasons for the estimated increase are not yet clear.
A higher starting price could also affect the iPad mini’s position within Apple’s tablet range. The device’s compact size makes it an option for users who want a smaller tablet for reading, browsing, gaming, and portable productivity. A substantial price increase could make prospective buyers weigh those advantages more carefully against larger iPad models or competing devices.
Apple has not formally announced the October event, and neither the proposed date nor the reported product specifications are guaranteed. The company could adjust its plans before making any official announcement, so the expected launch lineup and pricing remain subject to change.
According to Gurman’s report, the event could be Apple’s final major hardware launch of 2026. If that proves accurate, the company may then turn its attention towards a broader range of Mac, iPad and iPhone products expected in early 2027.
The reported plans suggest that Apple could be preparing a notable refresh across several product categories, combining new display technology with processor upgrades and design changes. However, the touchscreen MacBook Pro, OLED iPad mini, and associated pricing will remain speculative until Apple confirms them officially.
