Positioned as a controller for players who value simplicity and nostalgia, the Pocket Taco is designed to transform compatible smartphones into a vertical handheld gaming system. GameSir describes the device as being inspired by traditional arcade cabinets and classic portable consoles, while still offering the flexibility and performance expected by today’s mobile gamers. The controller is available in two colourways, a classic grey and Atom Purple, with the purple variant exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign.
The GameSir Pocket Taco is available to back on Kickstarter as well as via the GameSir website, with early bird pricing starting from US$34.99 or £27.99. The crowdfunding campaign is scheduled to run until 14 March 2026, with shipping to backers expected to begin in April.
Retro-inspired design built for modern mobile gaming
At the core of the Pocket Taco is its vertical clamp-style design, which securely holds a mobile device in portrait orientation. This layout is intended to replicate the experience of classic arcade and handheld games, particularly those designed around vertical screens and simple directional controls. Once attached, the controller effectively turns a smartphone into a compact, retro-style gaming console suitable for quick play sessions on the move.
Wireless connectivity is handled via Bluetooth, allowing the Pocket Taco to connect smoothly to Android devices and other supported platforms without the need for cables. This approach supports instant pick-up-and-play gaming, enabling users to unfold the controller, connect and begin playing within seconds. The emphasis on wireless performance and ease of use reflects GameSir’s focus on making the device suitable for casual daily carry, rather than only extended gaming sessions at home.
To protect users’ devices, the phone clamp is lined with soft silicone pads. These pads are designed to prevent scratches while also ensuring a firm grip during gameplay. This attention to physical protection is complemented by a secure clamping mechanism intended to keep phones stable even during more intense gaming moments.
Compact form factor with smart power features
Portability is a central theme of the Pocket Taco’s design. Measuring 78 × 70.9 × 20.7 mm and weighing just 62.2 grams, the controller is small enough to fit easily into a pocket or bag. To further support daily use, GameSir includes a PP storage box with the controller, offering additional protection when transporting it between locations.
The Pocket Taco also incorporates smart power functionality to minimise unnecessary battery drain. The controller automatically powers on when unfolded and switches off when closed, allowing users to move seamlessly between gaming and storage without having to manually manage power settings. This design choice aims to extend battery life while also simplifying the overall user experience.
Power is provided by a built-in 600 mAh battery, which GameSir says is capable of supporting extended gaming sessions. The controller’s hollow-bottom design ensures compatibility with most mobile charging ports, allowing users to charge their phones while playing. This feature is particularly relevant for longer sessions, reducing the risk of interruptions caused by low device battery levels.
Customisation, controls and app support
In terms of controls, the Pocket Taco features cushioned membrane ABXY buttons and a D-pad designed to deliver responsive input suitable for both retro and modern mobile titles. These are paired with tactile switch bumpers and triggers, offering crisp feedback and precise control. The layout is intended to strike a balance between classic simplicity and modern responsiveness, catering to a broad range of game genres.
Additional flexibility is provided through a built-in keyboard mode, which allows users to switch input types and remap button values for more specialised control requirements. This makes the Pocket Taco suitable not only for classic-style games, but also for titles that benefit from customised control schemes.
Further personalisation options are available through the GameSir app. Using the app, users can remap buttons, enable or disable D-pad diagonal lock, and configure features such as G-Touch and V-Touch. Some settings can also be adjusted directly on the controller using on-the-fly button combinations, allowing players to make quick changes during gameplay without needing to access the app.
With its combination of nostalgic design, compact hardware and modern features, the GameSir Pocket Taco is positioned as a controller for retro gaming enthusiasts, arcade fans and mobile players seeking a familiar experience in a contemporary format. By blending classic aesthetics with practical functionality, GameSir aims to offer a portable solution that fits seamlessly into modern mobile gaming habits.
