Bungie has shared more details about Marathon’s next major updates, including new game modes, a redesigned starting area, and additional systems planned for December and March 2027. The developer says the changes are meant to broaden how players can experience the extraction shooter and provide a stronger foundation for development throughout 2027.

The plans follow the upcoming Nightfall Refresh, which is scheduled for 6 October. Bungie previously announced that content originally planned for September would be moved into the December Symbiosis update, giving the studio more time to develop and test the larger features. The developer has also said it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule to allow more flexibility as it builds and improves major updates.

Symbiosis will expand Marathon with new ways to play

The Symbiosis update is scheduled to launch on 8 December and will introduce Marathon’s first permanent player-versus-environment experience. Bungie said the mode is intended to give players another way to explore and progress outside the traditional PvPvE extraction format. The developer is still finalising some details, but the broader goal is to give players space to experiment with builds and improve their skills without dealing with attacks from other players.

The update will also introduce an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. Rather than requiring players to commit to a full extraction run, the mode will provide a more direct competitive experience. Bungie said it plans to use what it learns from the experiment to help shape the future of competitive gameplay in Marathon.

The Perimeter zone, an early area for players, will receive a substantial overhaul. Bungie said the area currently lacks the distinct identity and depth found in some of the game’s other zones. The revised version will feature a stronger visual identity, new routes and encounters, including a fungal ecosystem that changes parts of the landscape. A new high-level encounter will also introduce the Tick Queen, which Bungie describes as its largest combatant yet.

Symbiosis will additionally add a new Runner shell called Bishop. Bungie describes the character as a “high-performance robot samurai”, adding another option for experienced players to explore. The update will also introduce a social space containing a firing range, giving players a dedicated location to practise weapons and abilities. The feature forms part of a wider effort to improve the experience for new players and make Marathon easier to learn.

March 2027 update will be substantially larger

Bungie is also looking beyond Symbiosis to a larger update planned for March 2027. The update does not yet have a name, but the studio says it will be “meaningfully larger than Symbiosis”. Rather than focusing on a single new mode or area, the March update is being positioned as a broader evolution of Marathon’s underlying structure.

One central plan is an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. This would bring together cooperative encounters, competitive matches and activities that combine player-versus-player and environmental threats. Bungie has presented the system as a way of making the different parts of Marathon work together rather than treating them as separate activities.

The March update is also expected to introduce another round of onboarding improvements. Bungie plans to change progression, including deeper development for the shell system, while adding more focused questlines and narrative content. The update will also feature a new zone and new alien combatants, giving players additional environments and enemies to encounter.

Bungie said the March changes are intended to provide a stronger foundation for Marathon beyond that update. The studio has described the release as an important point where the different experiences it is building will begin operating as a connected whole, while stressing that it will not represent the end of the game’s development.

Bungie is changing Marathon’s longer-term direction

The roadmap reflects a broader shift in how Bungie is approaching Marathon after player feedback. In a separate development update, the studio acknowledged that the game needs to evolve and said it wants to move beyond the restrictions of focusing primarily on extraction gameplay. Bungie said it intends to develop Marathon into a deeper survival experience with more ways for players to interact with its alien setting.

The October Nightfall Refresh will provide a smaller, more immediate update before the larger changes arrive. Bungie says that release will reset progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards and include quality-of-life and balance improvements. A limited return of Vault Breaker will also give the studio more information on how PvE activities fit into progression after a reset.

Between the October and December updates, Bungie plans to continue running gameplay experiments and gathering player feedback. The studio has said these experiments will help inform the development of the permanent PvE experience and other systems planned for later updates.

The December and March plans therefore represent two stages of a larger development strategy. Symbiosis is set to introduce permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, a redesigned Perimeter, Bishop, a social practice area and onboarding improvements. The March update is planned to build on those changes with connected PvE, PvP and PvEvP activities, expanded progression, new enemies, a new zone and more narrative content. Bungie has indicated that the work will continue beyond March as it develops Marathon alongside its player community.
