Minecraft is set to receive its first new dimension in more than 15 years, with Mojang Studios announcing The Sift for the Java and Bedrock Editions in 2027. Mojang revealed the new dimension during the Minecraft Live event, marking a major addition to the long-running sandbox game.
The Sift will follow The End, which was introduced with Minecraft’s 1.0 release in late 2011. While Mojang has not yet shared extensive details about the new dimension, the announcement suggests it will introduce new environments, creatures and gameplay mechanics for players to discover.
The Sift will introduce new areas and creatures
Mojang Studios has kept much of The Sift under wraps so far, but it has confirmed the dimension will include several distinct areas. Among those revealed are the Meadows and the Carapace, although the studio has not explained how these locations will differ or what players can find within them.
A teaser shared by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on X also offered an early glimpse at The Sift. The footage showed the new dimension alongside at least one previously unseen mob, giving players their first indication of what they can expect when the feature eventually reaches the main Minecraft game.
Today at Minecraft LIVE: Dungeons II, our first new dimension in more than 14 years, new ways for creators to build, Minecraft on Nintendo Switch 2, and more. More than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time on an average day. After 17+ years and 425M+ copies sold, I love that Minecraft is still finding new players and giving longtime ones new things to discover. 💚

According to Xbox, The Sift will include new mobs that can either become companions or pose threats to players. This suggests that encounters within the dimension could vary depending on the creatures players meet and how they interact with them.
Mojang has also teased changes beyond adding new environments and mobs. Xbox said The Sift will introduce “new rules to learn”, although the company did not explain what those rules will involve. The wording suggests the dimension could feature gameplay systems that work differently from those in Minecraft’s existing dimensions.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 will offer an earlier look
Players who want to explore The Sift before its arrival in Minecraft will not necessarily have to wait until 2027. Mojang is also using Minecraft Dungeons 2 to introduce the new setting, allowing players to see more of the dimension in the upcoming dungeon-crawling spin-off.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 is scheduled to launch on 29 September. As a sequel to the original Minecraft Dungeons, the game is expected to build on its predecessor’s action-focused gameplay while expanding the wider Minecraft universe. Including The Sift could provide more information about the setting before it makes its way into the main game.
Featuring The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2 also means the new dimension will appear in the Minecraft franchise before its planned 2027 debut in Java and Bedrock. However, details on how closely its spin-off version will match the experience planned for the main game have not yet been revealed.
For Minecraft players, the introduction represents a significant change after years without a completely new dimension. The Nether has received major updates over the years, and The End has also been expanded with additional content, but neither introduces an entirely separate dimension.
The long wait between new dimensions has made The Sift one of the more notable additions announced for Minecraft. Mojang has not yet provided a specific release date for 2027, so players will need to wait for more information on when the new content will arrive.
Minecraft continues expanding across platforms
The announcement of The Sift comes as Mojang continues to expand Minecraft across different platforms and editions. The game remains available on Java and Bedrock, with the two editions receiving ongoing updates and new content.
Alongside the announcement of The Sift, Mojang also reiterated plans to bring Minecraft to Nintendo’s Switch 2. The game is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo’s newer console on 27 October, giving players another way to access the block-building adventure.
The Switch 2 release is separate from the planned 2027 launch of The Sift in the Java and Bedrock Editions. Mojang has not indicated whether the new dimension will be available on Switch 2 at the same time as other Bedrock platforms, leaving platform availability details for a later announcement.
For now, The Sift remains largely unexplored. Mojang has confirmed its name, several locations and the presence of new mobs, while also hinting at gameplay rules that will make the dimension different from existing areas. More information is expected as development continues towards the 2027 release.
The addition also highlights Minecraft’s longevity, as it continues to receive substantial new content more than a decade after its full release. If Mojang follows through with its plans, The Sift will become only the third major dimension in the main game, alongside the Overworld, Nether and The End.
