Garmin teases possible Fenix 9 launch with surprise Play Harder livestream
Garmin has teased a “Play Harder” YouTube event, fuelling speculation that the Fenix 9 smartwatch series is about to launch.
Garmin appears to be preparing for a major product announcement after quietly scheduling a YouTube event titled “Play Harder”. The company has provided little information about what viewers can expect. Still, the timing and recent leaks have fuelled speculation that the event could mark the launch of the long-awaited Fenix 9 series.
The livestream is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm BST. That corresponds to 7:00 am Eastern Time and 4:00 am Pacific Time in the US, while viewers in Australia can watch from 9:00 pm AEST. The early timing for North American viewers means the event may be aimed primarily at audiences in Europe and other regions. However, Garmin’s global customers can follow the announcement online.
Garmin has rarely used this type of public livestream to introduce new hardware. The company typically reveals new watches and fitness products through press announcements and other promotional channels rather than building anticipation around a dedicated live event. Its decision to schedule a YouTube presentation is particularly notable.
The company has not confirmed what it will show during the event. The available teaser offers little more than an image of a surfer and the “Play Harder” title, leaving plenty of room for speculation about what could appear.
Fenix 9 could headline the announcement
The strongest possibility is that Garmin will finally introduce the Fenix 9, a smartwatch range that has been the subject of rumours for much of 2026. Reports point to a launch in the second half of the year. At the same time, recent retailer information has added to expectations that the next-generation outdoor watch could be close to release.
The Fenix line is one of Garmin’s most important premium smartwatch families, combining sports tracking, navigation and outdoor features with a design aimed at demanding users. A new generation would therefore represent a significant update for Garmin’s high-end wearable range.
Current expectations suggest that Garmin could introduce three versions of the Fenix 9 family. The standard model is expected to use an AMOLED display, following the direction taken by the Fenix 8. Garmin could also introduce two Pro variants, with one offering inReach satellite messaging connectivity and another without the feature.
Solar charging is also expected to remain part of the range. Garmin has increasingly used solar technology across its outdoor watches, letting users extend battery life by using sunlight during outdoor activities.
The proposed product structure would be broader than the company’s previous Fenix 8 and Fenix 8 Pro releases. Garmin introduced the Fenix 8, then followed it with the Fenix 8 Pro roughly a year later. If the latest reports are accurate, the company could instead reveal the new generation and its Pro models at the same time.
Other Garmin watches could also appear
Although the Fenix 9 is the most likely headline product, Garmin could use the event to introduce more than one new watch. The company has several product families aimed at outdoor athletes, endurance competitors and adventure users, meaning the “Play Harder” branding could apply to a wider collection of devices.
One possibility is the Enduro 4, although there has been considerably less information about the next-generation endurance watch. The Enduro family is designed around long battery life and is particularly suited to activities where frequent charging is impractical.
The Enduro 3 arrived alongside the Fenix 8, making another simultaneous launch a possibility. Garmin could therefore use the upcoming presentation to update both product families. However, the lack of recent information about an Enduro 4 means its appearance remains far less certain than that of the Fenix 9.
The solar capabilities associated with Garmin’s outdoor watches could also play an important role in any new Enduro model. The Enduro range is known for prioritising battery endurance, and solar charging can help extend operating time when a watch is used outdoors for long periods.
For now, Garmin has not confirmed any of these products. The company has also not explained whether “Play Harder” will be a conventional live product presentation, a short promotional video or a series of trailers leading into a later announcement.
The teaser currently gives potential buyers few clues beyond the surfer imagery and event branding. That means the livestream itself may be the first opportunity to establish exactly what Garmin has planned.
With the Fenix 9 already surrounded by months of speculation and retailer leaks pointing towards an imminent release, the timing of the event has nevertheless made the next-generation smartwatch the leading candidate. Garmin’s unusual decision to build anticipation around a YouTube event suggests that the company may have a substantial announcement ready. However, the final details will only become clear when the presentation begins.
