Google offers college students a free year of AI Pro

Google is offering eligible college students in the US a full year of its AI Pro subscription at no cost, giving them access to a range of artificial intelligence tools and additional cloud storage. The promotion provides a significant discount on a service that normally costs US$200 per year, or US$20 per month.

The offer targets students who want access to Google’s growing collection of AI-powered services. Alongside higher usage limits for Gemini, the subscription includes access to Google’s Spark agentic platform, and Gemini features integrated into Workspace applications such as Gmail and Docs.

Google expands access to its AI tools

Google AI Pro is centred on the company’s Gemini ecosystem, with subscribers receiving higher usage allowances than users on the standard free tier. Under the student promotion, eligible users receive four times the usual usage limits, allowing them to use Gemini more frequently for tasks such as research, writing, analysis and other everyday work.

The subscription also provides access to Spark, Google’s agentic platform designed to help users work with AI in a more capable and automated way. Gemini is also integrated into several Google Workspace applications, potentially making the service particularly useful for students who already rely on Gmail, Docs and other Google services for their studies.

The promotion allows Google to increase the number of people using its AI products, particularly among younger users who may become long-term customers. Offering a year without a subscription fee could also encourage students to incorporate Gemini into their regular academic and personal workflows before deciding whether to continue paying for the service.

The deal includes benefits beyond artificial intelligence, making it more substantial than a straightforward free AI subscription. Students also receive 5TB of Google Cloud storage, which can be used for documents, photographs, videos and other files.

Students also receive storage and health features

Another part of the promotion is access to Google Health Premium. The service can work with Fitbit devices and other health trackers, giving subscribers additional tools to monitor and understand health and fitness information.

Google is also offering a separate discounted bundle that combines AI Pro with YouTube Premium. The package costs US$9 per month, providing access to Google’s AI services alongside YouTube’s premium features and music-streaming service.

For students already considering YouTube Premium, the bundle could provide a relatively inexpensive way to access both services. It also gives Google another route to introduce students to its wider subscription ecosystem rather than limiting the promotion to Gemini and other AI products.

The main condition students need to consider is what happens when the promotional period ends. Like many subscription offers, the free year automatically renews at the regular price unless the customer cancels before the promotional period expires.

Students who sign up could therefore face a US$20 monthly charge, or US$200 for another year, if they do not cancel in time. Setting a reminder several weeks before the promotional period ends could help avoid an unexpected charge.

Cancelling can also become more complicated for users who use the additional 5TB of storage extensively. Students who fill that space during the free year may need to move or delete files if they decide not to continue with the subscription.

Google extends a smaller offer to students worldwide

Students outside the US are not completely excluded from Google’s latest promotion. The company is offering eligible international students a free year of Google AI Plus, a lower-cost subscription with fewer benefits than AI Pro.

Google AI Plus normally costs US$5 per month and provides access to Gemini Omni, along with twice the standard usage limits for the chatbot. The plan also includes 400GB of cloud storage, giving students additional space for academic and personal files.

The international offer therefore provides a smaller package than the one available to eligible US college students. While AI Plus does not include the same level of storage or the broader set of AI Pro benefits, the free year still represents a substantial saving for students who regularly use Google’s AI tools.

The promotions underline Google’s efforts to encourage wider adoption of its AI services by making paid features available to students at little or no initial cost. For students, the offers provide an opportunity to try Google’s more advanced AI and cloud services without committing to the normal subscription price during the promotional period.

Students considering the deals should check their eligibility and the terms that apply to their region before signing up. They will also need to track the renewal date if they do not want to continue paying after the free period ends.
