Google tests Gemini app for macOS amid growing AI competition

Google is reportedly developing a dedicated macOS version of its Gemini application, potentially expanding its artificial intelligence assistant into desktop environments. According to a Bloomberg report, the company has begun testing the app, signalling a move that would put it in more direct competition with rival AI tools already available on Mac computers.

The development reflects intensifying competition among major technology firms to establish their AI assistants as everyday productivity tools. While Gemini is already accessible through web browsers, a standalone desktop application could offer deeper integration with the operating system and provide a more seamless experience for users.

Expanding Gemini’s capabilities on the desktop

The macOS version of Gemini is expected to deliver a similar range of features currently available through its web interface. Users would be able to interact with the assistant through prompts, enabling tasks such as web searches, text generation, image creation and coding assistance. This aligns the app with offerings from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which already provide dedicated Mac applications for their AI tools.

A key feature under development is reportedly called Desktop Intelligence. This capability could allow Gemini to access and interpret on-screen content to provide more context-aware responses. According to code within the application reviewed by Bloomberg, “when you enable apps for Desktop Intelligence, you are enabling Gemini to see what you see (such as screen context) and pull content directly from these apps to improve and personalise your experience only when Gemini is in use.”

Such functionality would bring Gemini in line with existing features offered by competing applications, which can reference information displayed on a user’s screen. On mobile devices, Gemini has already demonstrated similar capabilities, suggesting that Google is aiming to extend these contextual features across platforms.

Competition intensifies among AI assistants

The introduction of a macOS app would position Gemini alongside established desktop AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude. Both applications already allow users to interact directly with their computers, including referencing open files or on-screen content to enhance responses.

However, it remains unclear whether Gemini’s macOS version will go beyond passive observation and offer deeper system control. Some rival tools have begun enabling users to perform actions within applications, such as editing documents or automating workflows. Earlier this year, the two companies revealed plans to integrate Gemini’s underlying AI models into future iterations of Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of AI-driven features.
