Mark Zuckerberg outlines vision to put AI superintelligence into everyday life
Mark Zuckerberg says Meta aims to bring AI superintelligence to billions through its apps while debate over user control continues.
Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has shared a vision for the future of artificial intelligence, arguing that powerful AI systems should be available to everyone rather than controlled by a small number of organisations. In an opinion article published by The Wall Street Journal, Zuckerberg described what he called “personal superintelligence”, a form of advanced AI designed to help people improve their health, increase productivity and support daily life.

The proposal presents Meta’s approach as an alternative to a future in which only governments, research institutions or a handful of technology companies have access to the most advanced AI capabilities. Instead, Zuckerberg believes ordinary users should benefit directly from increasingly capable AI systems through products they already use.
The vision arrives at a time when the development of advanced AI is accelerating rapidly. Technology companies are investing billions of dollars in computing infrastructure, while governments and researchers continue to debate how such systems should be regulated and what safeguards should accompany their deployment.
Meta plans to use its existing platforms to deliver AI
Meta is uniquely positioned to introduce advanced AI technology globally because of the size of its existing user base. According to the company, its family of apps recorded an average of 3.56 billion daily active users during March 2026. More than one billion people are already using Meta AI every month.
This extensive reach means Meta would not need to persuade consumers to purchase new hardware or register for a separate AI platform. Instead, the company could introduce more advanced AI features through software updates within applications that billions of people already use each day. From the user’s perspective, increasingly capable AI assistants could become another feature added alongside routine updates.
Zuckerberg’s concept of personal superintelligence centres on making AI feel like an everyday assistant rather than a specialised tool reserved for experts or businesses. Such technology could potentially help users complete work tasks more efficiently, manage personal projects or receive health-related guidance, depending on how future versions are developed.
However, even if the technology becomes more widely available, users would still interact with AI systems designed and managed by Meta. The company would remain responsible for deciding how the technology operates, what features become available and what limitations are applied to its models.
Building advanced AI remains concentrated among major technology companies
Although Meta’s strategy focuses on broad public access, the development of frontier AI models continues to require substantial financial resources and computational capacity. According to Stanford University’s 2026 AI Index, more than 90 per cent of notable frontier AI models introduced during 2025 were developed by companies rather than academic institutions.
The report highlights the growing concentration of AI development within a relatively small group of technology firms capable of funding the enormous infrastructure required to train increasingly sophisticated models. High-performance computing systems, specialised chips and large-scale data centres remain expensive investments beyond the reach of most organisations.
Meta has demonstrated the scale of that investment by forecasting infrastructure spending of between US$125 billion and US$145 billion during 2026. The expenditure reflects the growing competition among leading AI companies to expand computing capacity and improve their models’ performance.
Even if personal superintelligence becomes available to billions of users, the underlying technology would continue to be designed, trained and maintained by Meta. Decisions regarding model behaviour, safety measures, content restrictions, and system updates would remain under the company’s control rather than with the users who rely on the technology.
Public confidence in AI remains uncertain
Despite the rapid expansion of AI services, public enthusiasm has not kept pace with technological progress. Research suggests many people remain cautious about how quickly artificial intelligence is developing and whether technology companies can be trusted to deploy it responsibly.
A Pew Research Centre survey conducted in June 2026 found that 63 per cent of Americans believe AI is advancing too quickly. The same survey also reported that only 8 per cent of respondents expressed high confidence that American companies would develop artificial intelligence responsibly.
These findings suggest that making advanced AI widely available does not necessarily guarantee widespread acceptance. Concerns surrounding privacy, safety, transparency and corporate oversight continue to shape public attitudes towards increasingly capable AI systems.
Meta’s vast global audience gives the company an unmatched opportunity to introduce advanced AI into everyday digital experiences. However, the broader debate may ultimately shift from whether people can access powerful AI to whether they have meaningful influence over how those systems operate. As Meta continues to expand its AI ambitions, questions surrounding governance, safeguards, and user control are likely to remain central to discussions about the future of artificial intelligence.
