Meta is reportedly developing a new pair of smart glasses that removes the camera from its existing models to address privacy concerns around wearable devices. The new glasses, reportedly known internally as Luna, could begin shipping as early as October.
According to The Information, Meta could introduce Luna at its annual Connect developer conference, scheduled for 23 and 24 September. The glasses are expected to retain several features that make Meta’s current smart glasses useful, including built-in microphones, speakers, and access to Meta’s artificial intelligence assistant.
New glasses will focus on audio and Meta AI
Luna is reportedly being developed in two designs, known as Clubmaster and Burbank. Both versions are expected to have a more conventional appearance, with slimmer temples designed to make the glasses look more like ordinary eyewear than a technology product.
Unlike Meta’s existing camera-equipped smart glasses, the reported new model will not include a camera. Instead, Luna is expected to feature six built-in microphones and speakers positioned towards the wearer’s ears. These components would allow users to interact with Meta AI through voice commands while wearing the glasses.
The glasses are also reportedly expected to include a side button that provides quick access to Meta AI. Removing the camera could let Meta keep its voice-based assistant features while eliminating one of the main concerns about using smart glasses in public spaces.
Meta has not publicly confirmed the reported Luna product or its launch plans. The company could provide more details at Connect if it includes the device in its announcements.
Camera-equipped glasses face privacy concerns
Meta’s current smart glasses have attracted attention for their ability to capture photos and videos from a first-person perspective. However, that capability has also raised concerns about privacy and the possibility of people being recorded without their knowledge.
Critics have raised particular concerns about the potential for the glasses to be used to record or harass other people secretly. Some critics have even described the devices as “pervert glasses”, reflecting concerns about how a discreet camera can be used in public.
Meta has introduced safeguards intended to make recording more visible. Its existing glasses include an LED indicator that lights up while the camera is recording. The company has also made software changes after discovering ways to disable or obscure the recording indicator.
At one point, users could tamper with the LED so it would not illuminate while the camera was operating. Meta later released an update to prevent that method from disabling the recording indicator.
In August, the company also introduced another update to address a separate loophole. That change was intended to prevent users from secretly filming after a recording had already started by covering the LED light.
Luna could offer an alternative for hesitant buyers
Despite the privacy safeguards, concerns surrounding camera-equipped smart glasses could affect how some consumers view the products. Meta’s glasses have reportedly performed well in the market, but their association with discreet recording may make some potential buyers reluctant to purchase them.
A camera-free model could give Meta another way to appeal to people interested in smart eyewear but uncomfortable with wearing a device capable of recording those around them. By focusing on microphones, speakers, and voice interaction, Luna could provide access to Meta AI without an integrated camera.
The reported approach would also distinguish Luna from Meta’s existing smart glasses while keeping the basic concept of hands-free wearable technology. The slimmer design could further make the glasses less conspicuous as a technology product.
If the reports are accurate, Meta could reveal Luna at Connect on 23 September, ahead of a potential October shipping date. Until the company makes an official announcement, however, details including pricing, specifications and availability remain unconfirmed.
