Microsoft has confirmed that its annual update schedule for Windows 11 will remain consistent in 2025, with updates continuing to arrive in the second half of the year. On 30 August, the company announced that the next major package, Windows 11 version 25H2, is now available for testing in the Release Preview Channel.
The 25H2 update follows the same structure introduced with version 24H2 earlier this year, which introduced a new approach to rolling out features gradually. Microsoft’s enablement package method means that most changes are delivered in earlier monthly updates but remain disabled until activated by the larger annual update. This approach allows users to install 25H2 with a single system restart.
Features and changes included in version 25H2
Microsoft has not highlighted any major new user interface updates or artificial intelligence enhancements in this release. Instead, Windows 11 version 25H2 focuses on refining existing features introduced in 24H2 while making some key removals and administrative improvements.
One significant change is the removal of PowerShell 2.0, which Microsoft has been phasing out due to security and compatibility concerns. Additionally, the Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC) tool will no longer be available. These removals reflect Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to modernise the operating system and encourage users to adopt newer management tools.
For enterprise and education customers, the update introduces improved management controls. IT administrators will now have the option to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store applications on devices managed through Group Policy or Mobile Device Management Configuration Service Provider (MDM CSP). This new flexibility is designed to streamline deployments and reduce unwanted software on corporate and school systems.
How to access the update early
Users who wish to try the update before its wider release can join Microsoft’s Windows Insider Programme and opt into the Release Preview Channel. From there, the Windows 11 version 25H2 build (Build 26200.5074) is available for download and installation through the Windows Update settings menu.
Microsoft first detailed its annual servicing plan for Windows 11 in June, noting that the shared servicing branch enables a smoother upgrade experience. This method reduces disruption by preloading most updates in advance and minimising downtime when installing the final activation package.
The company has not confirmed when the update will be rolled out to all Windows 11 users, but it is expected to release it broadly in the second half of 2025 in line with its established update cycle.
