Motorola appears to be preparing another addition to its growing foldable phone range, with a new teaser suggesting that the next Razr will take a different approach from the familiar clamshell design associated with the brand.
The company has shared a short video on social media showing the evolution of Razr phones over the past 22 years. The final device shown in the timeline appears to be a compact, box-shaped foldable smartphone, offering an early look at what could become Motorola’s next major foldable launch.
Motorola hints at a new foldable design
The teaser offers few concrete details, but the silhouette of the upcoming phone clearly differs from recent Razr models. Rather than opening vertically like the modern Razr range, the new device appears to use a book-style folding design, similar to larger foldable smartphones already available from competing manufacturers.
The phone shown in the video also looks noticeably thicker and more compact than Motorola’s recent foldables. Its proportions suggest a wider internal display, although the teaser doesn’t reveal enough of the device to confirm its screen size, aspect ratio, or other specifications.
The move towards a wider display comes as manufacturers increasingly experiment with the traditional proportions of foldable smartphones. Recent devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Apple’s iPhone Duo have also been associated with wider screen designs, suggesting the market may be moving away from the tall, narrow displays used by many earlier foldable phones.
Motorola has not yet confirmed the new device’s name. The company has also not announced a launch date or provided details on its processor, cameras, battery, display, or pricing. The teaser therefore appears to be intended primarily to build interest ahead of a more detailed announcement.
Motorola expands its foldable phone range
The teaser comes as Motorola continues to increase its presence in the foldable smartphone market. The company has already released several clamshell-style Razr models, maintaining the basic concept of the original Razr while adapting it to modern smartphone technology.
The modern Razr range differs significantly from the original handset that helped establish the brand. The first Razr became known for its slim, vertically folding design and distinctive look, but Motorola has since turned the name into a broader family of smartphones with flexible displays.
This year, Motorola has also moved beyond its traditional clamshell approach with the launch of the Motorola Razr Fold. The device represents the company’s entry into the larger book-style foldable category, putting it into more direct competition with products from Samsung and Google.
The Razr Fold was reviewed in May and seen as a notable alternative to established foldable phone ranges. Its arrival also demonstrated Motorola’s intention to compete across more than one segment of the foldable market rather than relying solely on smaller flip-style devices.
The company’s latest teaser could therefore represent the next stage of that strategy. A smaller book-style model would give Motorola another option between conventional smartphones and larger premium foldables, potentially appealing to users who want the flexibility of a folding display without carrying a particularly large device.
Wider screens could shape the next generation of foldables
The apparent design of Motorola’s upcoming phone reflects a broader shift taking place in the foldable smartphone market. Manufacturers have traditionally had to balance the benefits of a large internal display with the limitations created by unusual screen proportions when the device is folded.
A wider design could make foldable phones more practical for everyday activities such as browsing websites, watching videos and using productivity applications. It could also provide a more familiar screen shape when the device is opened, although the benefits will ultimately depend on the final dimensions and software experience.
For Motorola, a compact book-style foldable could also help distinguish its portfolio from the clamshell Razr models already on sale. While the Razr name has historically been closely associated with flip phones, the company appears increasingly willing to use the brand for different types of folding smartphones.
Considerable uncertainty remains around the new device. Motorola has yet to confirm whether it will be sold globally, how much it will cost or whether it will sit below or alongside the Razr Fold in the company’s range. The teaser also does not establish whether the phone shown is a finished retail product or an early concept.
More information is expected to emerge as Motorola prepares for its next foldable announcement. Until the company releases additional details, the short social media video remains the main indication that a new compact, book-style Razr is in development.
