Updated versions of M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro are expected in late 2025

Apple's M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro are expected in late 2025, while the first M4 MacBook Pros are anticipated before Christmas this year.

Apple enthusiasts, brace yourselves for a bit more waiting. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the updated versions of Apple’s most powerful desktops—the Mac Studio and Mac Pro—are not quite ready for release. The good news is that these devices, featuring the highly anticipated M4 chips, are expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2025.

Last update at WWDC 2023

To remind you, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro were last updated at WWDC 2023. These updates featured the fastest versions of the M2 chip—the M2 Max and M2 Ultra. So, if you were hoping for M3 versions of the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, you might be disappointed. It’s said that the M3 chip lacks the high-speed UltraFusion interconnect—the technology that combines two chips to create an “Ultra” variant chip.

M4 chips are coming to the MacBook Pro first

As for the M4 Macs, you can expect the first devices to feature Apple’s newest M-series chip to be the 13 and 16-inch MacBook Pro. These are expected to be updated later this year, just before Christmas, with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.

You must be patient if you are waiting for an updated MacBook Air. Rumours suggest that the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air will only get updates early next year, likely because they received an update earlier this year.

Given that the MacBook Air is Apple’s best-selling MacBook, it makes sense that Apple wants more time to ensure it has enough M4 chips to meet demand for the MacBook Air.
