Whisker introduces Litter-Robot 5 Pro with AI facial recognition for cats

Whisker introduces the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, featuring AI facial recognition and new smart features for advanced cat care.

Whisker has unveiled its latest innovation in automated pet care, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro, a self-cleaning litter box featuring AI-powered facial recognition designed to identify individual cats. Building on the success of the Litter-Robot 4, this new model combines smart technology with convenience, aiming to make pet ownership easier and more insightful for cat owners.

AI meets cat care

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro is equipped with two night vision-enabled cameras. One camera scans a cat’s face, while the other monitors its waste, helping to deliver more accurate tracking of each pet’s bathroom habits. Whisker says this system allows owners to observe behavioural changes and detect potential health issues early.

To complement the device, Whisker is introducing a new subscription service called Whisker Plus. Available at US$7.99 per month or US$79.99 annually, the service provides detailed behavioural analysis and long-term data insights. Subscribers can view and save video footage of their cat’s activity — although, unfortunately for feline friends, there is no option to opt out.

Priced at US$899, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro can identify multiple cats using its AI technology. For households with pets that look alike, it also works with the Whisker PetTag, a US$29 RFID accessory that helps distinguish between animals. The tag doubles as a digital ID, complete with a QR code that allows anyone who finds a lost pet to contact its owner.

New design and improved features

The fifth-generation Litter-Robot series features several hardware improvements. The devices now feature a larger waste bin, which reduces the need for frequent emptying, and a new LCD control panel for on-device updates, making them less reliant on the app.

Whisker says the upgraded system can now differentiate between urine and faeces, dispatching the latter more quickly for better odour control. Like previous models, the Litter-Robot 5 Pro rotates after each use, automatically depositing waste into a sealed bin.

The standard Litter-Robot 5, which costs US$799, shares most of the same features but does not include cameras. Both the 5 and 5 Pro models can accommodate up to five cats, one more than their predecessor, the Litter-Robot 4.

Budget-friendly option and availability

In addition to the Pro and standard versions, Whisker has also introduced the Litter-Robot Evo, a smaller and more affordable option priced at US$599. Designed for up to two cats, the Evo omits some premium features such as automatic night lights and litter-level sensing but retains the new LCD for ease of use.

The Litter-Robot 4 remains available for purchase at US$699. All models integrate with the Whisker app, allowing users to initiate cleaning cycles remotely, receive usage alerts, and track each cat’s weight and activity. However, access to detailed behavioural insights, trend analysis, and video recordings requires a Whisker Plus subscription.

All three new Litter-Robot models are currently available for preorder on Whisker.com and are expected to begin shipping on 3 November.
