Apple is reportedly working on adding a live translation feature to AirPods, which could be introduced later this year. The update is expected to be part of iOS 19 and enhance your communication in different languages using your AirPods and iPhone.

Live translation could arrive with iOS 19

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple plans to roll out live translation for both current and upcoming AirPods models as part of the iOS 19 update. The feature would allow you to have real-time conversations in foreign languages using a combination of your AirPods and iPhone.

The way it works is simple: when speaking to someone in a foreign language, your AirPods will capture their speech, translate it instantly, and play the translation directly into your ears. When you respond, the AirPods will translate your speech and play it aloud through your iPhone’s speakers. This would make conversations between different language speakers more seamless and natural.

Apple catching up with competitors

While this may seem like a breakthrough for Apple, live translation in earbuds is not new, as competitors have offered similar features for years, Google introduced real-time language translation in 2017 with the first-generation Pixel Buds, which worked with Google Assistant to translate conversations on the spot.

In 2018, the Mars wireless earbuds also brought real-time translation capabilities, and more recently, Samsung’s Buds3 series introduced translation support when paired with the Galaxy Z Fold6 or Z Flip6. With Apple joining the competition, AirPods users can now access this highly useful technology without relying on third-party apps or services.

iOS 19 could bring more than just translation

In addition to the new AirPods translation feature, Apple is expected to launch a major update to its Translate app with iOS 19. Reports suggest that Apple is working on a significant redesign to make iOS 19 look and feel more like visionOS, the software used in Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

With these updates, Apple focuses on making communication more accessible and improving the overall user experience across its devices. While the company has yet to confirm these reports, the possibility of live translation on AirPods could be a game-changer for international travellers, business professionals, and anyone who regularly interacts with speakers of other languages.
