Apple may launch an upgraded Vision Pro headset before the end of 2025

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its second-gen Vision Pro with an M4 chip and better comfort as early as 2025.

Apple is preparing to release the second-generation Vision Pro headset as early as this year, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. If you’ve been waiting for improvements to Apple’s high-end mixed-reality device, the next version could bring notable upgrades, including a faster chip and a more comfortable fit.

A faster chip and improved AI performance

The current Vision Pro, released in February 2024, runs on the M2 processor — a chip Apple first introduced back in 2022. But the upcoming model is expected to feature the latest M4 processor, a move that aligns with Apple’s broader shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) across its product lines.

You’ll likely notice a big jump in performance with the M4 chip, especially when it comes to AI. While the current model uses a 16-core neural engine, Bloomberg reports that the new headset could feature even more neural engine cores — possibly more than any current M4 chip. Until now, only the M2 Ultra and M3 Ultra have included more than 16 AI processing cores. But even if the core count stays the same, the M4’s neural engine is still more than twice as fast as the M2’s.

This would make the new Vision Pro one of the most AI-capable devices in Apple’s line-up, following the company’s recent push to integrate AI into the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Comfort upgrades to address user feedback

You may have heard some users say that the Vision Pro feels heavy after prolonged sessions. That’s because the headset weighs roughly 1.4 pounds, and for many, this weight can lead to discomfort in the neck or head. Apple seems to have heard that feedback loud and clear.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is testing redesigned straps to make the headset more comfortable to wear. Some users have already reported that pairing Apple’s Solo Knit Band with a US$50 Belkin Head Strap results in a better fit than using Apple’s original bands alone. This feedback may have influenced the redesigns currently in testing.

Making the Vision Pro easier to wear could significantly boost its appeal, especially for individuals who want to use it for extended periods, whether for work, gaming, or immersive experiences.

Future plans hint at lighter and more affordable options

While this year’s Vision Pro upgrade appears to focus on performance and comfort, Apple is also looking ahead to more consumer-friendly versions. Both Gurman and supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggest that Apple is planning to launch a lighter and more affordable Vision Pro model in 2027.

Interestingly, Kuo also mentioned that Apple could be working on an M5-powered Vision Pro headset by the end of 2025. However, it remains unclear whether this will be a third model or a more powerful version of the upcoming M4 model.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly developing a pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses, similar to the smart glasses introduced by Meta. These glasses could offer a more casual, everyday wearable experience — possibly blending the worlds of reality and digital overlays without the bulk of a full headset.

For now, all eyes are on Apple’s next move, and if Gurman’s report is accurate, you might see the second-generation Vision Pro hit the market before the year ends.
