BMW has officially revealed its latest i3 electric vehicle, marking a significant departure from the original model introduced in 2013. The new version transforms the once compact hatchback into a sleek, sporty saloon designed to rival traditional 3 Series models while embracing the brand’s electric future. The unveiling follows an earlier prototype demonstration, during which selected drivers tested the car in winter conditions.

The redesigned i3 represents a major evolution in both design and engineering. Built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, the vehicle draws clear inspiration from the Vision Neue Klasse concept first shown in 2023. Unlike its predecessor, which stood out for its unconventional styling, the new i3 adopts a more familiar and refined appearance, aligning with expectations for a premium executive saloon while avoiding some of the more controversial design elements seen in recent petrol-powered models.
Performance, range and charging capabilities
The new i3 delivers a notable increase in power and efficiency. In its 50 xDrive configuration, the car features dual electric motors mounted at the front and rear, producing a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. While BMW has not yet disclosed official acceleration figures, the performance places it close to the current M3 in terms of output, suggesting strong on-road capability.
Range is a key highlight of the new model. BMW estimates the i3 will achieve up to 440 miles on a single charge under EPA testing standards, positioning it among the longest-range electric vehicles in its class. This extended range is supported by an advanced 800-volt electrical system, which also enables significantly faster charging. The car is capable of DC fast charging at up to 400kW, allowing for rapid energy replenishment approximately 30 per cent quicker than BMW’s previous-generation technology.
The battery design has also been rethought to improve overall performance. By integrating the battery pack directly into the chassis, BMW has reduced weight while enhancing structural rigidity. This approach not only benefits handling but also improves efficiency. Additionally, the i3 introduces bidirectional charging capability, enabling the vehicle to supply power back to a home or other devices during outages, effectively turning it into a mobile energy source.
Design and interior technology
Visually, the new i3 adopts a cleaner and more cohesive front-end design. The grille and headlights are merged into a single unit, creating a streamlined look that departs from BMW’s more aggressive recent styling. A subtle recess along the bonnet draws attention to the brand badge, while sculpted lines and pronounced wheel arches give the vehicle a muscular stance. Details such as side air intakes and the “Le Catellet Blue” metallic paint option further enhance its sporty character.
Inside, the cabin reflects BMW’s latest approach to digital design and user experience. The centrepiece is a 17.9-inch Panoramic Vision display angled towards the driver, complemented by an optional 3D head-up display. Together, these systems provide key driving information in a highly immersive format. The infotainment system includes a self-learning voice assistant powered by Amazon Alexa+ artificial intelligence, allowing for more natural interaction and personalisation.
The interior also offers a wide range of customisation options. Buyers can choose from various seat designs, including multifunction and M Sport variants, with finishes such as imitation leather in colours like Agave Green, Digital White, Castanea and Black. A more premium option is available through the BMW Individual programme, which features genuine black Merino leather. Controls are managed through a combination of traditional physical buttons and “Shy Tech” interfaces on the steering wheel that illuminate only when needed.
Practical features have not been overlooked. The vehicle includes a wireless charging pad for smartphones and other devices, while Digital Key Plus allows drivers to unlock and start the car using a smartphone or smartwatch. These additions aim to enhance convenience and align the i3 with modern digital lifestyles.
Production timeline and market expectations
BMW has confirmed that production of the new i3 will begin in August 2026, with customer deliveries expected to start later in the autumn. Pricing details have not yet been announced, but the company has indicated that more information will be released closer to the launch date.
Given its advanced technology, extended range and performance capabilities, the new i3 is expected to sit at the premium end of the electric vehicle market. While it promises significant improvements over its predecessor, it is unlikely to be positioned as an entry-level offering. Instead, BMW is targeting buyers seeking a high-performance electric saloon with cutting-edge features and long-distance capability.
The launch of the new i3 also signals BMW’s broader commitment to its Neue Klasse platform, which is set to underpin a new generation of electric vehicles from the brand. By combining improved efficiency, faster charging and enhanced digital integration, the company aims to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive EV market.
