Kojima Productions has released the first teaser trailer for Death Stranding Isolations, an upcoming animated series based on the world of Hideo Kojima’s popular video game franchise. The short trailer offers an early look at the show’s characters, atmosphere and visual direction ahead of its planned Disney+ release next year.
The teaser introduces several familiar elements from the games, including a mysterious courier carrying a large collection of cargo on their back. However, much of the footage centres on a young girl who wakes up in terror after experiencing nightmares about being consumed by BTs, the hostile, supernatural entities that threaten living creatures in the Death Stranding universe.
The trailer’s unsettling imagery and horror-inspired atmosphere hint at the direction the animated series may take. Its release shortly before Halloween also heightens the impact of the disturbing scenes, although the footage reveals little about the wider storyline.
Death Stranding Isolations introduces an original storyline
Although the teaser doesn’t explain the plot in detail, the official YouTube description outlines the premise of Death Stranding Isolations. The animated series will feature an original story set within the established Death Stranding universe, taking place shortly after Sam Porter Bridges successfully reconnects North America through the Chiral Network.
The story follows a young girl who has deliberately separated herself from the outside world. Having grown accustomed to living alone, she prefers isolation and has little interest in reconnecting with other people. However, unexpected encounters begin to change her circumstances and push her into an unfamiliar world.
The official synopsis states: “Fate has other plans for her, however, and chance encounters see her launched headfirst into a world she does not recognise.”
The series will also introduce several other characters whose personal struggles appear to form an important part of the narrative. Among them is a wise elderly man who finds unusual ways to connect people, a female soldier trapped in an ongoing cycle of warfare and destruction, and a young boy consumed by anger over the circumstances of his life.
These characters suggest that the series will explore themes of isolation, human relationships, conflict and survival, which have been central to the Death Stranding franchise. Rather than directly adapting the games’ events, the production appears to expand the fictional universe through new characters and independent storylines.
One particularly unusual detail revealed in the promotional material is the series’ tagline: “My mom became a crater.” The cryptic statement reflects the franchise’s strange storytelling style and raises questions about the events surrounding the characters.
Hideo Kojima joins the anime production team
Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Death Stranding franchise, is involved in the animated project as an executive producer. Kojima previously served as the writer, designer and director of both Death Stranding games, making his involvement an important connection between the anime and its source material.
Takayuki Sano will direct the series and lead production of the new animated adaptation. While further details about the animation studio, voice cast, and full production team remain unrevealed, Kojima’s involvement suggests the project will stay connected to the original games’ creative direction.
Death Stranding Isolations is scheduled to arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2027. An exact premiere date has not been announced, and the teaser provides no further information about the number of episodes or the series’ overall runtime.
The upcoming anime is part of a wider effort to expand the franchise beyond video games. Several other adaptations are also in development, including an animated film titled Death Stranding Mosquito and a separate live-action film involving independent film company A24.
The live-action project is expected to bring another interpretation of the franchise’s unusual science-fiction world to the screen. However, details about its storyline, cast and release schedule remain limited.
With multiple adaptations in development, Death Stranding is gradually expanding into other forms of entertainment. Death Stranding Isolations will be the next major opportunity for audiences to explore its mysterious world, particularly for viewers who may not have experienced the original games.
The first teaser offers only a brief introduction. Still, its focus on supernatural threats, troubled characters, and unexpected connections suggests the anime will retain the distinctive atmosphere that has made the franchise recognisable.
