Discord expands Nitro perks with Xbox Game Pass starter edition
Discord adds Xbox Game Pass starter edition and gaming discounts to Nitro without increasing subscription prices.
Discord has introduced new benefits for subscribers to its Nitro service, including access to a new Xbox Game Pass starter edition. The move forms part of a wider rewards programme launched to mark Nitro’s 10th anniversary, as the company looks to add more value for paying members without raising subscription prices.
The new Game Pass offering gives eligible Nitro subscribers access to a catalogue of more than 50 games across console and PC. Titles currently included range from Fallout 4 and Stardew Valley to DayZ, Deep Rock Galactic, Overcooked 2 and Grounded. Discord said additional games will be added over time as the programme develops.
The starter edition also includes 10 hours of cloud gaming access each month, allowing players to stream selected titles directly from their Xbox library. Subscribers will also be able to earn Xbox rewards through the service. The offer is available only to Nitro members who do not already have an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
Discord broadens Nitro rewards programme
The latest addition is part of Discord’s new Nitro Rewards initiative, which introduces gaming-related discounts and digital perks for subscribers. According to the company, the rewards are being rolled out gradually over the coming weeks to all eligible users.
Discord confirmed that the price of Nitro will remain unchanged despite the new additions. The subscription continues to cost US$10 per month or US$100 per year. However, users on the lower-cost Nitro Basic and Nitro Classic plans will not qualify for the new rewards programme.
Alongside the Xbox Game Pass starter edition, Discord is also offering discounts on selected gaming accessories and hardware. Early offers include 30 per cent off Logitech G products, 15 per cent off SteelSeries equipment and 20 per cent off KontrolFreek accessories.
The company is also expanding access to Orbs, Discord’s virtual currency used to unlock profile and avatar customisation options. Subscribers will have more opportunities to earn Orbs through platform activities and promotions linked to Nitro Rewards.
Xbox partnership highlights growing competition
The partnership between Discord and Microsoft reflects increasing competition among subscription services in the gaming industry. Companies are continuing to bundle services and digital rewards to attract and retain users in a crowded market.
Discord’s new starter edition resembles Microsoft’s existing Xbox Game Pass Essential tier, although it comes with some limitations. The biggest difference is the cap on cloud gaming: Nitro subscribers are restricted to 10 hours per month instead of unlimited streaming access.
The offer will initially be available in selected countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The collaboration also works in the opposite direction. Microsoft is preparing to introduce Discord-related rewards for Game Pass subscribers later in May. Under the arrangement, Game Pass members will receive 250 Discord Orbs each month, additional Orbs for completing Quests and discounts in the Discord shop.
Industry analysts have noted that gaming companies are increasingly relying on partnerships and subscription incentives to strengthen user loyalty. Services such as Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Discord Nitro now compete not only on content libraries but also on additional benefits, exclusive promotions, and community features.
Discord has steadily expanded Nitro beyond its original focus on chat enhancements and profile upgrades. The subscription initially centred on features such as higher-quality streaming, larger file uploads and animated avatars. The addition of gaming subscriptions and hardware discounts signals a broader push towards becoming a more comprehensive entertainment membership service.
The company has not announced whether the Xbox Game Pass starter edition will eventually be available in more regions or whether further subscription partners will join the Nitro Rewards programme. However, the latest changes suggest Discord is positioning Nitro as a more competitive offering within the wider gaming ecosystem.
