Google to roll out update for Pixel 6A battery overheating next week

Google’s July 8 Pixel 6A update limits battery overheating by reducing capacity after 400 cycles, with free replacements for affected users.

If you own a Pixel 6A, a new software update from Google is on the way — and it’s not one you’ll want to ignore. Starting July 8, Google will begin rolling out a mandatory update to all Pixel 6A devices. The update is intended to reduce the risk of battery overheating, an issue reported by some users and linked to at least two cases where the phone caught fire. While every Pixel 6A will receive the Android 16 update, only phones flagged as “impacted devices” will see battery-related changes.

Update reduces battery capacity on affected phones

The fix comes after Google confirmed that the update will gradually lower the battery’s capacity once an impacted Pixel 6A reaches 400 full charge cycles. This measure is designed to enhance safety and mitigate heat buildup in older batteries. Google’s Alex Moriconi said that the update includes smart battery management tools that will activate once your phone approaches this threshold.

Before these changes take effect, your device will send a warning at approximately 375 charge cycles. This alert is intended to notify you that your phone is about to adjust its power handling. Once the new system is live, the battery will no longer last as long between charges, but the goal is to ensure the phone remains safe to use as the battery ages.

You may notice reduced performance

Aside from reduced battery life, you may also notice a decrease in charging speed or slight changes in how your phone displays its battery level. According to Google, these are normal as the phone learns its adjusted capacity under the new settings. Some of these changes could be temporary while your phone recalibrates. Although the downgrade in performance may be frustrating, these updates are necessary to protect the device and the user from overheating risks.

What’s unclear is why only some Pixel 6A phones are affected. Google hasn’t released a specific explanation, but they have put measures in place to support those who experience battery trouble. If your phone is identified as one of the affected models, you’ll be eligible for a free battery replacement. You can check your device’s status and see if you qualify by visiting Google’s official support page.

Google offers free battery replacement

This isn’t the first time Google has had to respond to battery-related issues. The company faced a similar situation with the Pixel 4A, where it offered free battery replacements or a US$100 credit toward the purchase of a new phone. Google is also running an extended repair programme for Pixel 7A users who have experienced battery swelling.

With the Pixel 6A update set to begin on July 8, it’s essential to keep your device updated and check if your phone is among the affected units. While some users may notice a drop in performance, the update aims to prevent much more serious issues. With free battery replacements available for affected phones, Google is demonstrating a clear commitment to user safety and satisfaction.
