Meta appears to be nearing the launch of Muse, an AI-powered personal assistant designed to do more than answer questions. The agent is reportedly being developed to handle routine digital tasks, remember longer-term goals and take action on a user’s behalf, potentially giving it a more active role in managing everyday life.

The latest signs of progress come from screenshots shared by TestingCatalog, which suggest Muse has advanced beyond internal development and into a limited closed alpha. An invite-code system reportedly appears alongside a waitlist, indicating that Meta may be preparing to expand access to a small group of testers.

Muse aims to become a more proactive assistant

Unlike conventional AI chatbots, agentic AI systems are designed to carry out tasks rather than respond to prompts. That could include finding information in an inbox, working with connected services, tracking deadlines, and completing a series of actions with limited user involvement. Meta has been exploring this direction as it develops its broader AI strategy.

The screenshots reportedly show how Muse could handle a practical task from start to finish. In one example, the assistant finds a school field-trip permission slip in a user’s email and completes the relevant information. It then identifies that the trip requires a chaperone, checks the user’s availability and asks whether it should register them and send a confirmation email.

Once the user approves the action, Muse reportedly says it will remind them to pack lunch. The example highlights the type of multi-step assistance Meta appears to be targeting. Rather than requiring the user to search through emails, check a calendar, complete a form and set a reminder separately, the AI would coordinate those steps as part of a single task.

Another screenshot reportedly shows a dedicated interface for managing personal goals. Examples include making dinner reservations, preparing for a marathon, and saving towards a new car. The interface appears to allow users to organise goals across areas such as health and relationships while tracking progress over time.

Meta’s official App Store listing describes Muse as a personal AI agent capable of managing email, which is consistent with the tasks shown in the reported screenshots. If the system can reliably combine information from different services and remember the context surrounding a task, it could represent a significant shift in how consumers interact with AI assistants.

Limited testing suggests a wider launch could be approaching

TestingCatalog reports that Muse has entered limited alpha testing, with invite codes reportedly appearing for selected users. A waitlist is also said to be available, suggesting Meta is gradually increasing access while the service remains under development.

The reported rollout is expected to include both mobile and web versions. Desktop access could be introduced later, although Meta has not publicly confirmed a full launch schedule. The company has also yet to announce whether the standalone Muse experience will require a subscription or how pricing might work.

The limited testing phase will allow Meta to evaluate how the agent performs in real-world situations. Managing an inbox or creating a reminder may sound straightforward, but an assistant that can take action on users’ behalf needs to understand context accurately and avoid mistakes.

For example, deciding whether a person is genuinely available to chaperone a school trip could require more than simply finding an empty calendar slot. Similarly, sending an email or making a reservation involves actions that users may expect the AI to complete only after receiving clear approval. These situations make reliability, permissions and user control particularly important as agentic AI becomes more capable.

Muse follows Meta’s broader AI ambitions

Muse would not be an isolated experiment for Meta. The company has already been adding more task-focused capabilities to Meta AI as it looks beyond the traditional chatbot model. In July, Meta introduced features focused on areas including planning, email and calendar connections, and daily briefings designed to provide users with useful information.

The development reflects a wider industry shift towards AI agents that can interact with software and online services. Instead of simply generating text or answering questions, these systems are being designed to interpret a user’s objective, determine the steps needed to achieve it and carry out those actions.

For Meta, Muse could eventually become a more central part of its consumer AI offering. An assistant that understands a person’s ongoing goals and can act across email, calendars and other services could have a much more practical role than a conventional chatbot.

However, the reported screenshots only provide an early look at what Meta is building. The company has not announced a broad public release date for Muse, and the features seen during testing could change before the service becomes widely available. Its success will ultimately depend on whether it can manage the unpredictable details of everyday tasks accurately while giving users enough control over important decisions.

If Meta can deliver on that promise, Muse could move AI assistants closer to functioning as genuine digital organisers rather than tools that wait for the next question.
