OpenAI is reportedly developing a new desktop application that brings together its ChatGPT assistant, web browsing capabilities and coding tools into a single platform. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal and CNBC, the initiative forms part of a broader effort to streamline the company’s product offering and improve the overall user experience.

The proposed application, internally described as a “super app,” aims to consolidate multiple standalone tools into a cohesive interface. The move reflects a shift in strategy as OpenAI seeks to focus its resources more effectively and reduce fragmentation across its software ecosystem.
Leadership push to simplify product ecosystem
The project is being led by Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s Chief of Applications, with support from company president Greg Brockman. Simo is also expected to play a key role in promoting the application once it is officially launched, although no release date has been confirmed yet.
In a public statement, Simo indicated that the company is entering a new phase of focus after a period of experimentation. “Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical,” she said. “But when new bets start to work, like we’re seeing now with Codex, it’s very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we’re seizing this moment.”
Reports suggest that internal concerns about inefficiency influenced the decision to unify the tools. In a note to employees seen by the Wall Street Journal, Simo acknowledged that the company had been spreading its efforts too thinly across multiple applications. She reportedly wrote that “fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want”.
The remarks highlight a broader effort within OpenAI to streamline development and concentrate on delivering higher-quality products. By consolidating its offerings into a single desktop environment, the company hopes to eliminate redundancy and provide a more consistent user experience.
Focus on productivity and advanced AI capabilities

During an all-hands meeting, Simo reportedly told employees that the company was “orienting aggressively” towards these types of applications.
