Major investors join OpenAI’s funding round

SoftBank is expected to contribute US$7.5 billion initially, with an additional US$2.5 billion coming from an investor syndicate. The round also includes hedge fund Magnetar Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund, and Altimeter Capital Management participation. Bloomberg reports that Magnetar may invest as much as US$1 billion.

A second investment phase is expected later this year, during which SoftBank plans to invest another US$22.5 billion. An additional US$7.5 billion will be raised through syndication, bringing the total funding to US$40 billion.

OpenAI’s valuation soars to US$300 billion

This funding comes after OpenAI’s previous US$6.6 billion round in October 2024, which was led by Thrive Capital and valued the company at US$157 billion. With this latest investment, OpenAI’s valuation is expected to skyrocket to US$300 billion.

The significant backing from SoftBank and other investors reflects strong confidence in OpenAI’s future. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, this funding round will likely help the company expand its AI capabilities and maintain its position as a leader in the industry.
