Sony launches FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS lens with advanced stabilisation and 1.4x magnification

Sony introduces the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS lens with 1.4x magnification, fast autofocus, and optical stabilisation for close-up photography.

Sony has announced the launch of the FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS (SEL100M28GM), the first medium telephoto macro lens in its G Master series designed for Alpha E-mount cameras. This new lens is engineered to deliver exceptional detail for close-up photography, combining high magnification with advanced stabilisation and intuitive controls.

Expanding the limits of macro photography

The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS stands out for its 1.4x maximum magnification, enabling photographers to capture small subjects such as flowers, insects, and intricate textures with exceptional clarity. For those looking to go even further, the lens is compatible with an optional teleconverter, available separately, which can extend magnification up to 2.8x. This provides greater flexibility and distance between the camera and subject, reducing the risk of casting shadows or causing reflections while shooting.

Precision-focused design and advanced features

The lens incorporates an advanced optical structure featuring two extreme aspherical (XA) elements and two extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements. This design helps maintain sharpness from the centre to the corners of the image while suppressing chromatic and other types of aberration. To make focusing easier across various macro photography scenarios, the lens includes several dedicated controls. These include a Full-time DMF switch that allows photographers to instantly switch to manual focus, a Focus Mode switch for quick toggling between autofocus and manual modes, and a Sliding Focus Ring with distance and magnification scales for precise adjustments.

Performance is enhanced by four extreme dynamic (XD) linear motors, which enable fast, accurate, and near-silent autofocus. Sony states that autofocus is up to 1.9 times faster than previous models. A dedicated aperture ring provides direct, tactile control over exposure, catering to both photography and videography needs.

Outstanding image quality with reliable stabilisation

The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS has been built to deliver the smooth, high-quality bokeh associated with Sony’s G Master series. Its 11-blade circular aperture helps create soft, rounded out-of-focus areas, while careful spherical aberration control ensures a natural balance between detail and background blur. The Nano AR Coating II minimises flare and ghosting, even in challenging backlit conditions, for consistent image quality.

For handheld shooting, Sony has integrated a macro-optimised optical image stabilisation system that compensates for common shake types, including angular and shift movements, as well as front-to-back shake. This gives photographers greater stability when working close to their subjects.

Availability and promotional offer

The FE 100mm F2.8 Macro GM OSS will be available in Singapore from early November 2025. As part of a special launch promotion running from 17 October to 17 November, customers will receive limited-edition Collector’s Edition Sony Hot Shoe Covers themed for macro, food, portrait, and nature photography, along with a G Master Premium Gift Set valued at around S$160.
