TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 combines four hard drives and four NVMe SSDs

TerraMaster has launched the D8 Hybrid 2, an eight-drive storage enclosure designed to accommodate four SATA hard drives or SSDs alongside four M.2 NVMe SSDs. By placing faster working storage and higher-capacity archive drives within a single device, this hybrid layout allows users to connect their media directly to a computer or a compatible network-attached storage system.

When fully populated with four 30TB hard drives and four 8TB NVMe SSDs, the unit reaches a total maximum capacity of 152TB. TerraMaster is aiming this setup squarely at video editors, media archive managers, and system backup administrators who need quick access to active project files without sacrificing long-term storage space.
Active files can be separated from archives
To keep performance high while managing costs, the D8 Hybrid 2 lets users store frequently accessed files on high-speed NVMe SSDs, reserving traditional hard drives for larger archives and cold data. TerraMaster refers to this setup as a hot and cold data tiering strategy, leveraging NVMe performance for intensive workloads while relying on standard spinning disks for cost-effective capacity.
Data travels through a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection capable of providing up to 10Gbps of bandwidth. Under ideal conditions, TerraMaster rates the enclosure for read speeds reaching 1,020MB/s when accessing a single NVMe SSD, whereas a four-drive hard drive array can achieve up to 980MB/s depending on the chosen RAID configuration.
According to performance estimates from the manufacturer, these speeds mean a 5GB video file can be transferred in roughly five seconds. TerraMaster suggests these metrics will translate into smoother 4K and 8K video editing alongside reduced project loading times, though the announcement lacks independent benchmark verification.
Flexibility is a key focus of the architecture, as each of the eight drives can operate independently. This allows users to divide files across individual disks without needing to build a single merged storage pool, though third-party RAID software remains fully supported for those who prefer combining drives for increased speed or redundancy.
Drive installation requires few tools
Setting up the hardware is designed to be straightforward. The four SATA bays utilise TerraMaster’s toolless Push-Lock trays, which simplify the installation of hard drives and 2.5-inch SSDs, while the internal M.2 NVMe slots reside behind a sliding side panel secured by hand-tightened screws.
These physical updates serve to streamline drive installation and replacement, complemented by a front-mounted power button that offers convenient access when the unit sits on a desk or shelf.
Power management features include a dedicated hardware switch for toggling between Power Save Mode and Active Mode. The unit also debuts TerraMaster Power Management, a proprietary feature created to refine overall energy efficiency, speed up drive wake-up times, and enhance operational stability.
Thermal control relies on a temperature-controlled fluid dynamic bearing fan rated for an operating lifespan exceeding 50,000 hours, which adjusts its speed based on internal conditions. To handle the unique thermal profile created by running spinning hard drives next to high-speed NVMe SSDs, TerraMaster has also redesigned the internal chassis airflow.
Support covers computers and NAS platforms
Broad compatibility is built into the unit, enabling it to operate across macOS, Windows, and Linux environments without requiring custom drivers. Native support spans several file systems, including NTFS, APFS, EXT4, FAT32, and exFAT, making it easy to integrate into diverse operating workflows.
Connectivity is handled via a USB Type-C port that accommodates standard connections across USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2, USB4, and Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5 devices. TerraMaster includes a Type-C to Type-C cable in the box to link directly to the enclosure’s 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface.
For backup management, Windows users can utilise the bundled TPC Backupper software for incremental and differential tasks, while Mac users can tie the hardware directly into Apple’s native Time Machine system.
Beyond standalone desktop use, the device functions as an expansion unit for compatible TerraMaster NAS hardware running TOS 5 or TOS 6. The host operating system recognises all eight individual drives, allowing administrators to expand existing storage pools, configure custom RAID levels, and run system snapshots.
The enclosure extends its support to enterprise and home lab environments, including platforms like Windows Server, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS, and Unraid, alongside direct connections to supported servers, smart televisions, and set-top boxes.
In terms of pricing, the TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 is listed at £299.99 on Amazon UK and US$299.99 on Amazon US. As part of the launch promotion, an applied 20% coupon temporarily brought the US price down to US$239.99, with availability also offered directly through the official TerraMaster web store.
