Update your ChatGPT app on macOS to fix a security flaw

Update your ChatGPT app on macOS to fix a security flaw that exposed user conversations, ensuring your data remains private and secure.

OpenAI has released an updated version of its ChatGPT application for macOS in response to a newly discovered security flaw. This update is essential for protecting private conversations from exposure.

A security flaw exposed user conversations

The security issue left users’ ChatGPT conversations stored in plain text on their computers, making them easily accessible. This problem was uncovered by developer Pedro José Pereira Vieito, who demonstrated how other applications on the same device could read these conversations.

Vieito discovered that OpenAI had yet to use the app sandbox protections typically employed to safeguard data. Instead, ChatGPT conversations were stored locally on devices without encryption. This oversight meant anyone accessing the file location could read the user’s ChatGPT interactions.

Vieito created a proof-of-concept application to display ChatGPT conversations in real-time, highlighting the vulnerability. He shared a demo of this app to showcase the flaw.

OpenAI’s swift response

OpenAI acted quickly upon being informed of the issue by The Verge. The company acknowledged the problem and promptly released an update to address it. OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson emphasised the company’s commitment to user security and data protection.

“We are aware of this issue and have shipped a new version of the application that encrypts these conversations,” said Christianson. “We’re committed to providing a helpful user experience while maintaining our high security standards as our technology evolves.”

Update your app to ensure security

If you are using the ChatGPT macOS app, it is crucial to update to the latest version immediately. This update will ensure your conversations are encrypted and secure from unauthorised access. OpenAI’s quick response to this issue demonstrates its dedication to user safety and privacy.

Keeping your software up-to-date is vital to maintaining device security. Make sure to check for updates regularly and apply them as soon as they become available.

Updating your ChatGPT app allows you to continue to enjoy the benefits of AI-powered conversations without worrying about your privacy being compromised. OpenAI’s prompt action in addressing this vulnerability highlights the importance of staying vigilant and proactive about digital security.
