XBOX puts console exclusives back in focus with 25th anniversary showcase
XBOX Games Showcase 2026 confirmed selective console exclusives, 25th anniversary hardware and a release slate led by familiar franchises.
XBOX Games Showcase 2026 centred on a platform decision: Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be XBOX console exclusives, and XBOX said these are not timed exclusives.
Table Of Content
That was the clearest message from a showcase that also covered anniversary hardware, first-party releases, partner titles and updates for live games. XBOX continues to support console, PC, cloud, Game Pass and XBOX Play Anywhere, but the event gave the console itself a more defined role within that wider ecosystem.
The timing also gave the showcase a symbolic layer. XBOX is marking its 25th anniversary with limited-edition hardware inspired by the original console, while leaning on familiar franchises to steady its next release cycle.
The exclusives carry the clearest platform message
Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution gave XBOX its strongest answer to the question of what still belongs to its own hardware. XBOX said both games will be console exclusives, while games already announced for multiplatform release will keep those plans.
The decision gives XBOX a selective exclusivity model. The platform is still built around wider access through PC, cloud and Game Pass, but some first-party titles are being kept closer to console. That gives XBOX room to support broader distribution without making the console feel secondary to the rest of the ecosystem.
Gears of War: E-Day received the biggest spotlight. The first gameplay trailer returned to Emergence Day, focusing on the start of the Locust War and the early bond between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. The separate Gears of War: E-Day Direct then gave The Coalition more room to explain the game’s story, gameplay and franchise history.
The game will launch on 6 October, with pre-orders giving players early access to the Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta from 6 August 2026. Its role in the showcase was bigger than one release date. It gave XBOX a franchise-led console exclusive with enough history to carry the anniversary year.
Clockwork Revolution played a different role. The new trailer for inXile entertainment’s steampunk RPG introduced Morgan’s gang, the Rotten Row Hooligans, and the Chronometer, which Morgan discovers after being hurled into the past by Prentice. Its pitch is built around time-bending choices and a reactive world, giving XBOX a first-party exclusive that is less dependent on legacy recognition than Gears.
Familiar franchises make the release cycle easier to read
The rest of XBOX’s first-party slate leaned heavily on known names. Halo, Fable, Minecraft, DOOM, Call of Duty, Spyro, Senua and State of Decay give the platform a pipeline that is broad, but also familiar.
The nearest releases are built around franchise extensions and returning names. DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations arrives on 7 July with a new campaign expansion, new levels, deeper puzzles, new demons and the Chain Spear. Halo: Campaign Evolved follows on 28 July 2026, with Operation: METEORITE adding three new missions featuring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson on a UNSC operation behind enemy lines.
Minecraft Dungeons II is due on 29 September, adding new environments, tougher enemies and more character customisation. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives on 23 October with a new DMZ extraction experience, where players deploy solo or in squads to recover military technology from a conflict zone.
The 2027 pipeline gives XBOX more room to rebuild several long-running series. Fable is scheduled for 23 February 2027, with Hayley Atwell playing Isabel, the Hero of Wraithmarsh, and the trailer also teasing the return of Jack of Blades from the original Fable. Spyro: A Realm Beyond is planned for spring 2027 and is described as the first completely original Spyro game in almost 20 years, with true dragon flight and longtime Spyro voice actor Tom Kenny returning.
Ninja Theory’s Senua and Undead Labs’ State of Decay 3 give the slate more genre range. Senua takes the Hellblade universe into a more action-adventure direction, with tactical combat, boss fights and perception-based puzzles. State of Decay 3 continues the series’ open-world survival focus, with settlement building, survivor management and shared-world co-op for up to four players.
Partner titles keep Game Pass supplied across genres
The partner slate helped XBOX widen the showcase without relying entirely on Microsoft’s studios. ATLUS gave the event two major RPG beats, announcing Persona 6 with a teaser trailer and confirming that Persona 4 Revival will launch on 18 February 2027. Both games are listed for XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, cloud, Game Pass and XBOX Play Anywhere.
METRO 2039 added another recognisable franchise to the 2027 calendar, with its first gameplay trailer showing a return to post-apocalyptic Moscow. Team NINJA revealed Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember for early 2027, while Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty joined XBOX Game Pass on the day of the showcase.
Other partner titles gave the line-up breadth across action, role-playing, simulation and narrative-driven games. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy arrives on 27 August with a story set 15 years before the first game in the series. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse launches on 15 October, Valor Mortis arrives on 24 September 2026, and Crazy Taxi: World Tour is scheduled for 2027.
XBOX also showed Magicians: The Devil’s Deal, Vivarium and Bad Magpie. Where Winds Meet was released on XBOX during the showcase, with benefits for XBOX Game Pass Ultimate subscribers and a Hidden Mountain expansion planned for July 2026.
Live games and anniversary hardware round out the ecosystem
XBOX also kept existing games in the showcase through updates for Age of Empires IV, The Elder Scrolls Online, Fallout 76, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Sea of Thieves.
Age of Empires IV will add Raiders of the North later this year, introducing Vikings and Scots as new civilisations. The Elder Scrolls Online Season One arrives on 8 July with a new Thieves Guild storyline, followed by a high-seas event, the Prince of Madness, new challenges and rewards.
Fallout 76 received the free Infestations update, which adds new threats across Appalachia and new 4-Star Legendary weapon and armour mods. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is adding more than 30 US national parks through the free World Update 22: US National Parks, with the National Championship Air Races coming in a later free update.
Sea of Thieves Season 20 will introduce Custom Seas on 18 June. The feature gives players tools to set rules, create custom game modes, add items and enemies, assign crews and use Free Camera mode to capture player-created scenarios.
The 25th anniversary hardware sat alongside that wider ecosystem message. The XBOX Series X25 Limited Edition uses a translucent design inspired by the original XBOX and its OG Green styling. The XBOX Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition references the original ABXY colours, XBOX green and the black and white buttons on the original “Duke” controller. The collection will be available in select markets in November, with the controller also sold separately.
