Xbox restores services after hours-long outage affects online and disc-based games
Xbox restored services after a global outage disrupted sign-ins, purchases and even some disc-based games for several hours.
Xbox users around the world experienced several hours of disruption after a widespread service outage affected account access, game launches and purchases across multiple generations of the company’s gaming consoles.

The outage began on Sunday evening and continued into Monday before Microsoft confirmed that the issue had been resolved. During the disruption, players reported problems signing in, accessing the digital store and launching both digital and physical games on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles.
Outage disrupted core Xbox services
Microsoft’s Xbox status page showed that a range of essential services had been affected during the incident. Users experienced difficulties signing into their Xbox profiles, while some who were already logged in were unexpectedly disconnected from the service.
The company warned that features requiring an active sign-in would not function as expected. This included access to most games, applications and online social features. In addition, some users were unable to launch installed games, browse the Microsoft Store or complete purchases during the outage.
One notable aspect of the disruption was that it also affected certain disc-based games. Although physical copies are generally expected to work independently of online services, Microsoft’s status page stated that players “may have problems” playing both digital and disc-based titles while the outage was ongoing. This highlighted how modern console gaming often depends on online account verification, even when using physical media.
As reports of the outage spread across social media, many players shared their frustration over being unable to access games they owned. The disruption came only days after PlayStation Network experienced a separate large-scale outage, meaning gamers on both major console platforms faced service interruptions within the same week.
Microsoft worked to restore access
Microsoft acknowledged the issue publicly as engineers worked to restore normal service. In an update posted on X during the early hours of Monday, the Xbox team said, “Our engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue.”

Later in the day, the company reported gradual improvements but cautioned that some players could still experience difficulties. Microsoft wrote that “things are slowly improving, though players worldwide may still experience failures launching games, along with potential sign-in and purchase issues.”
The final update arrived at 6:48 pm Eastern Time on Monday, when the Xbox team confirmed that the disruption had been resolved. The company said the issue “should now be mitigated” and added that players should “once again be able to launch games, sign in and complete purchases.”
Following that announcement, the official Xbox status page returned to normal, with all monitored services showing operational status. The restoration marked the end of several hours of intermittent problems that affected users across multiple regions.
Although Microsoft confirmed that services had recovered, the company did not immediately provide technical details about the cause of the outage or explain why disc-based games were also affected during the incident.
Outage follows recent Xbox restructuring
The service disruption comes during a period of significant change for Microsoft’s gaming division. In recent weeks, the company announced another round of workforce reductions as it continues to reshape its Xbox business.
Microsoft previously confirmed that approximately 1,600 employees had been laid off. The company also announced plans to eliminate a further 1,600 positions by the end of June 2027 as part of its broader restructuring efforts.
While there is no indication that the latest outage was connected to the organisational changes, the incident arrived at a time when Xbox has been under increased scrutiny from both players and industry observers. Service reliability remains particularly important as Microsoft continues to expand its digital ecosystem through online subscriptions, cloud gaming and digital game purchases.
The outage also renewed discussion about the growing dependence of modern gaming systems on online authentication. Even players using physical game discs can sometimes require online account verification before launching titles, meaning server disruptions may temporarily prevent access to games that users already own.
Microsoft has not announced whether it will publish a detailed post-incident report explaining the cause of the outage. For affected players, however, the restoration of sign-ins, purchases and game launches brought Xbox services back to normal after several hours of widespread disruption.
