Xperia 1 VIII brings AI-guided shooting to Sony’s flagship smartphone line
Sony’s Xperia 1 VIII adds AI-guided shooting, a larger telephoto sensor, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and up to two-day battery life.
Sony has announced the Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship smartphone, with the main update centred on how users capture photos rather than on a single camera hardware change. The device introduces a new AI Camera Assistant powered by Xperia Intelligence, alongside a larger telephoto sensor and low-light processing across all three cameras.

The camera system covers 16mm, 24mm, and 70mm focal lengths. Sony says all three cameras deliver low-light performance comparable to a full-frame sensor in terms of noise reduction and dynamic range, allowing clearer imaging in darker environments.
AI support for everyday photography
The Xperia 1 VIII’s AI Camera Assistant is designed to guide users through camera settings instead of leaving them to adjust every element manually. When the camera is pointed at a subject, the system recognises the scene by combining factors such as the subject and weather conditions, then suggests options including colour tones, lens effects, and bokeh expressions.
These recommendations are based on Creative Look, Sony’s imaging approach developed through its α Alpha camera line. The feature lets users apply suggested settings with a tap, which gives the system a more assistive role while still allowing the user to choose the final creative direction.
The more substantial hardware change sits in the telephoto camera. Sony has equipped it with a new 1/1.56-inch image sensor, about four times larger than the sensor in the previous model. The larger sensor is intended to improve clarity and detail when shooting distant subjects, particularly in low-light conditions.
Sony has also applied RAW multi-frame processing across all lenses. The processing expands dynamic range while reducing noise in low-light scenes, helping to limit highlight clipping and shadow crushing in high-contrast images. The company says this also improves colour reproduction and preserves fine details across bright and dark areas.
A redesigned body with familiar Xperia controls
The Xperia 1 VIII introduces Sony’s new ORE design, which takes its colour inspiration from raw gemstones. The phone will be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold, although colour availability may vary by market, variant, or sales channel.
The redesigned body has been built around the new telephoto camera, with updated material processing across the sides, back, and overall frame. Sony says the subtle surface texture is intended to improve grip and make the device more comfortable to hold.
While the design has changed, Sony has retained two familiar Xperia features. The dedicated camera shutter button remains, reinforcing the phone’s camera-oriented positioning. The 3.5mm audio jack is also kept, supporting wired headphone use and audio quality associated with Sony’s WALKMAN DNA.
Audio and performance support the media focus
The media emphasis extends beyond the camera system. The Xperia 1 VIII uses newly developed identical left and right speaker units for its Full-Stage Stereo Speakers. Sony says the setup delivers deeper bass, more extended high frequencies, and a wider and deeper soundstage, with clearer reproduction of voices and instruments.
Performance is handled by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. Sony says the Xperia 1 VIII improves processing speed and overall performance by 20% compared with the Xperia 1 VII, covering app launches, multitasking, gaming, and content creation.
Battery life is rated at up to two days, based on Sony’s stated usage profile. The company also claims four years of healthy battery life, based on simulations of repeated USB charging and discharging with the same battery type. Processing Optimization has also been applied to map apps, which typically draw more power, to reduce overall power use.
Orders open with an early bird bundle
The Xperia 1 VIII will be available for ordering from 13 May 2026. An early bird promotion will run from 13 May to 30 June 2026. It includes WF-1000XM6 Noise Cancelling Headphones worth S$479 and a first-party casing worth S$50.
Sony is also offering an optional case for the Xperia 1 VIII. The case uses translucent material to show the phone’s ORE-inspired design, includes a built-in stand for both vertical and horizontal positioning, and uses material that is resistant to yellowing.
