Google introduces Pixel Care Plus with free screen and battery repair

Google launches Pixel Care Plus with free screen and battery repairs, lower service fees, and optional loss and theft coverage.

Google has announced the launch of its Pixel Care Plus programme, which replaces the company’s previous extended warranty plan, Preferred Care. The updated plan offers a similar pricing structure, with coverage starting at US$8 per month or US$159 for a two-year package on a Pixel 9. Owners of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will pay US$18 per month or US$339 for two years. Customers can also opt for a loss and theft coverage option for an additional small monthly fee.

The Pixel Care Plus programme introduces several changes aimed at simplifying repair costs for Pixel device owners. While Preferred Care required a US$29 service fee to replace a cracked front screen, the new plan now offers front screen and battery replacements at no cost. Batteries running at less than 80% capacity can also be replaced at no additional charge. However, internal screens on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold are not covered under this benefit.

Lower fees for accidental damage repairs

Google has also reduced fees for accidental damage repairs across its Pixel line-up. Charges vary by model, starting at US$49 for older phones such as the Pixel 8a and 9a. For the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, repairs for accidental damage cost US$99, while the Pixel 9 Pro and Fold models incur fees of up to US$129.

The optional loss and theft coverage adds between US$1 and US$2 per month to the base plan price. Deductibles under this option can reach up to US$149 depending on the device model.

By lowering fees and providing free replacements for common issues, Google aims to make its protection plan more appealing to Pixel users who want added peace of mind without high repair costs.

Competing with other smartphone makers

The introduction of Pixel Care Plus follows similar moves by other smartphone manufacturers. Earlier this year, Samsung removed screen replacement fees from its extended coverage plans, and Google is aligning its offering with these industry trends.

By offering free screen and battery replacements alongside lower service fees, Google is positioning Pixel Care Plus as a more comprehensive and cost-effective coverage option compared to its predecessor. The move may also encourage users to hold on to their devices for longer, as repair costs become less of a concern.

Pixel Care Plus is now available to customers purchasing new Pixel devices, as well as existing users who wish to upgrade their warranty plan.
