Sonos and Ikea go their separate ways, ending the Symfonisk speaker line

[output_post_excerpt]

If you’ve been eyeing a Symfonisk speaker for your home, now might be the right time to make that purchase. Sonos has officially confirmed ending its long-standing partnership with Ikea, bringing the curtain down on their joint Symfonisk speaker range.

The collaboration between the two companies began in 2019. It was a promising and well-received project that brought together Sonos’ expertise in sound and Ikea’s knack for stylish, affordable furniture. The result? A line of smart wireless speakers that didn’t just sound good—they looked good too, blending into your home décor with ease.

A strong eight-year partnership

In a statement, a Sonos spokesperson shared appreciation for the journey the two brands had taken together:

“Over the past eight years, we’ve enjoyed working closely with Ikea and are proud of our achievements. Although our work together has largely wound down and we won’t be releasing new products as partners, we’ll continue supporting every existing Symfonisk product so customers can keep enjoying great sound in their homes for many years.”

This confirmation marks the end of a collaboration that many considered one of the best ways to get started with Sonos’ home audio system without spending too much. The Symfonisk speakers were fully compatible with other Sonos products, allowing many users to build a sound system at a more affordable price throughout their homes.

What happens next for Sonos

The end of the Ikea partnership isn’t the only shift happening at Sonos. Over the past year, the company has faced its share of challenges. One of the biggest missteps came with releasing a new app that was not well received. Many users reported disruptions to their home audio setups, bugs, and a lack of key features. Since then, Sonos has been trying to recover, scale back, and refocus.

Earlier this year, it scrapped plans for a rumoured streaming video player, signalling a move away from exploring new product categories and instead focusing on strengthening its core audio products. Ending the Ikea partnership is part of that strategy.

Should you still buy a Symfonisk speaker?

If you’re considering adding a Symfonisk speaker to your setup, you can still find them on Ikea’s website. While no new models will be coming, all existing speakers will continue to receive support from Sonos, according to the company’s statement. That means your current or future Symfonisk products won’t suddenly stop working.

There’s also an added benefit for Apple users. Even if Sonos stops providing updates or support down the line, the speakers can still function as AirPlay 2 devices. That means you can stream audio from your Apple gadgets like iPhones, iPads, and Macs without issue.

As the availability of these speakers may become limited, now could be your last chance to get one before they disappear from the shelves. Whether you’re a longtime Sonos fan or someone just starting to build a smart home audio system, the Symfonisk speakers have been a reliable and attractive option—one that will be missed.
